Virginia High School League
Top 10 Rankings Per Division thru games played Sept. 28, 2008

(Sept. 30, 2008) – The Potomac Falls High School is tied for first in the state in the AA Division 4 football ratings released by the Virginia High School League Tuesday.

The Panthers, a big winner over Heritage on Friday, have a 26.5 rating, which ties the Panthers with Pulaski County. Broad Run (4-0) is tied for third with a 25.0 rating. Loudoun County (3-1) is ninth, thanks to a win over Park View and Handley’s surprising win over Sherando Saturday in the Northwestern District.

In AAA Division 5, the mediocre record of Stone Bridge’s opponents thus far has the Bulldogs at No. 7 in the state with a 26.8 rating. Phoebus, which fell to SB in the state quarterfinals last season, leads the state with a 29.2 rating. Edison, which lost to SB in the Northern Region finals, is tied for second with a 28.4 mark.

Football: Friday Night Scoreboard

AA Dulles District

Broad Run 29, Briar Woods 0
The Skinny: Spartans score on their only four drives of the first half to post a 23-0 lead and win this rivalry game that featured unbeatens and 2007 playoff teams before a packed house in Ashburn. It was 16-0 before Falcons picked up a first down in the game. Chris Jessop ran in a score and threw to Didier Saidi for a score in the first half. Breon Earl had a 33-yard run on the second play of the game to set up the first TD and a long punt return to set up the second score. BR 1-0, 4-0. BW 0-1, 3-1.

Potomac Falls 48, Heritage 21
The Skinny: Panthers explode for 28 points in the first quarter in this battle of unbeatens. Tarrell Owens intercepted three passes in the game and returned one for a score. He also caught a 38-yd TD. Michael Baker rushed 15 times for 114 yards and three scores of 58, 5 and 1. Greg Woodlief threw for three scores on 9 of 14 passing and 114 yards. Heritage QB Brian Rody threw for 217 yards on 16 of 31 passing but the Panthers defense held Pride RB Ross Madison to 42 yards on 19 carries. PF 1-0, 4-0. Her 0-1, 3-1

Dominion 35, Freedom 7
The Skinny: Titans earn first victory for new coach Karl Buckwalter with Deandre Reaves rushing for 247 yards on 24 attempts and scores of 52, 22 and 58. Dom 1-0, 1-3. Free 0-1, 1-3.

Loudoun County 21, Park View 4
The Skinny: LC  (and the weather!) ruins night celebrating former PV coach Ed Scott. We aren’t sure if the Patriots got a grand slam or if it was two safeties (OK … it was two late safeties that the Raiders took rather than punting out of their own end zone) but the Raiders defense shuts down the Patriots in the district opener. LC now has more victories than 2006 and 2007 combined. Joe Bushrod scored twice in the win. Park View had a TD called back on a penalty, couldn’t score on 4th-and-goal from the 1 and had two passes intercepted inside the 10 in the loss. LC 1-0, 3-1. PV 0-1, 1-3.

AAA Liberty District

Stone Bridge 51, McLean 13
The Skinny: Bulldogs scored all 51 points in the first half with Daniel Allen scoring four touchdowns on four carries! He finished with 167 yards and scores of 6, 71, 20, and 70. Patrick Thompson tossed three touchdowns and went 10 of 14 for 184 yards. SB 2-0, 5-0. McL 0-2, 0-5.

Oakton 42, Langley 3
The Skinny: Non-District loss for Saxons who stand at 2-0, 2-3.

Madison 42, TJ 15
The Skinny: Warhawks have won two straight in district. Mad 2-0, 3-2. TJ 0-2, 1-4.

Marshall 28, J.E.B. Stuart 0
The Skinny: Statesmen snap three-game skid in non-district affair. Mar 0-2, 2-3,

Woodson vs. South Lakes

AAA Cedar Run District

Osbourn Park 21, Loudoun Valley
The Skinny: Vikes TD drought continues with three shutouts in four games. OP’s impressive resume includes just 17 points allowed in four games and only loss came 3-0 to Potomac. OP 1-0, 3-1. LV 0-1. 0-4. (and a big thanks to Scott Radcliffe and David Gunnell for help with this score!)

Liberty vs Osbourn
The Skinny: Shifted to Saturday night.

Fauquier 42, Culpeper 9
The Skinny: Falcons have scored 171 points in four wins. Culpeper has scored a total of nine points in three losses. Fauq 1-0, 4-0. C 0-1, 1-3.

Battlefield 29, Stonewall Jackson 0
The Skinny: Former Dominion coach Mike Dougherty still looking for first win with Raiders program, with star RB Thigpen still out. BF has three shutouts in four wins. BF 1-0, 4-0. SJ 0-1, 0-4.

Football Power Rankings

LPS Thursday Noon Quarterback

Sept. 25, 2008

“IT … IT … We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ IT”

This is a rush job folks as the DigitalSports system is going to “sleep” for the next 24 hours as we undergo some behind-the-scenes software changes … So, enjoy and hopefully we will be back up and running before the storm blows out of town!

LPS Power Rankings

1. Stone Bridge (4-0)

Last week: Defeated Loudoun Valley, 64-13

Last week’s Ranking: No. 1

The Skinny: Gosh … we wonder how many points Stone Bridge will score when QB Patrick Thompson finally gets healthy. Honestly, this team has more Natural Resources than Alaska. Future would-be tacklers of Bulldog DL Brian Slay on interceptions (!) will now need GEICO full collision coverage

This Week: vs. McLean (0-4)

The Skinny: Highlanders. Be Afraid. Very, very afraid. May be biggest mismatch since England vs. Falklands Islands.

2. Broad Run (3-0)

Last week: Defeated Brentsville, 53-13

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 2

The Skinny: When the Spartans were just wee lads … they must have had very bad experiences with punts. You see, on offense, they never do punt (hey, doesn’t that upback on 4th-and-5 look like QB Chris Jessop!) and on defense, they like to block punts right and left.

This week: vs. Briar Woods (3-0)

The Skinny: A great Border Battle as these two Ashburn neighbors (part of the Golden Touchodwn Triangle with Stone Bridge, copyright and trademarked by the LPS Monkey, 2008) open Dulles District play with what should be an SRO crowd. Big question: Can BW stop BR around the corners? And Big Question Part Duex … Will a Muddy Track favor Billy “I’ve got a fullback Named Billy, 16 Carries on the Erie Canal” McDonald and the Falcons. And Biggest Question, Part Trey: Will I find a parking spot at BR?

3. Briar Woods (3-0)

Last week: Defeated Hedgesville 57-3

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 3

The Skinny: You just know that score raised eyebrows as BW is a great team but wasn’t seen as a team that could break loose for that many points. Senior defense hasn’t allowed a TD since the first half of the Millbrook season opener.

This week@ Broad Run

The Skinny: Honetly, parking is so bad at Broad Run, that we hear that Carl “Mr. Loudoun” Lukat of the LTM and the LPS Monkey are commuting together (Sportswriters Go Green!) … Rich Sanders of the Fairfax Connection we hear is already sleeping in his car on the campus so he doesn’t miss the kickoff this year!

4. Potomac Falls (3-0)

Last Week: Bye

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 4

The Skinny: It may have been a bye week but the Panther defense accused the PF offense of running the score up in practice this week … people, people, it’s a joke! Unless your from Hedgesville and then, man, it is one long football season!

This week: vs. Heritage (3-0)

The Skinny: Heritage can be a Jekyl-and-Hyde team but Ross Madison is liable to break loose on any play. You know Heritage’s defense has their chin straps on before they even hit Route 7. PF has been more than about the passing game as Michael Baker has been money thus far and the PF defense has been rock solid. This should be a thriller.

5. Heritage (3-0)

Last Week: Bye

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 5

The Skinny: Heritage had a tough game at PF two years ago but returned the favor to the Panthers last year in Leesburg. We think this game is so even that turnovers will be the diference … make’em and see an 0-1 record next to your district mark.

This week: @ Potomac Falls (3-0).

The Skinny: .

6. Park View (1-2)

Last week: bye

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 6

The Skinny: Patriots may just want to go to the No Huddle 24-7 after success in final moments vs. Handley two weeks ago

This week: vs. Loudoun County (2-1)

The Skinny: This is a fun match-up. LC moves to the next level with a win and Park View has a chance to prove that they are more the team that played Handley than the team that played Herndon.

7. Loudoun Valley (0-3)

Last week: Lost to Stone Bridge 64-13

Last Week: No. 7

The Skinny: Hey, scoring 13 points off SB is scoring 13 points off a team that won’t give up many points.

This week’s Ranking: vs. Osbourn Park (2-1)

The Skinny: The Yellow Jackets have only given up two touchdowns all season and their only loss was 3-0 to AAA Division 5 state runner-up Potomac.

8. Loudoun County (2-1)

Last week: bye.

Last Week’s Ranking: No. 8

The Skinny: Curse you Bye week! I had Chase Williams starting in my High School Football Fantasy FootbalL League!

This week: @ Park View

The Skinny: Joe Bushrod has had a nice start to the season throwing to Mike Ayoub but watch out for Chase Williams inside the 20 as he is the go-to target.

9. Freedom (1-2)

Last Week: Lost to King George 36-21

Last Week’s Ranking: 9

The Skinny:
The Eagles were up early but faltered in the second half. A litte like what happened in the season opener.

This Week: @ Dominion (0-3)

The Skinny: Freedom will want that early lead because you know Deandre Reaves, Titans RB, often gets stroner as the night wears on.

10. Dominion (0-3)

Last week: Lost to Tuscarora MD 39-14

Last Week: No. 10

The Skinny: What? They played on Saturday …. Wish it wasn’t our night to give the LPS Monkey a bath

This Week: vs. Freedom (1-2)

The Skinny: There are no “Must Win” games this early in the season … but for Dominion, the Titans need a victory over a Freedom team that went 0-10 last season or risk a downward spiral as the schedule gets tougher.

Golf: Young Raiders Capture Dulles District Title

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

Sterling (Sept. 25, 2008) – Laughter may be the best medicine, but for Loudoun County High School golf coach John Laycock, in and out of the hospital the past month, winning is also a pretty good perscription.

Laycock, back after complications from a shoulder surgery in August left him sidelined, and John Brown, the former Raider golf coach who stepped in for Laycock this season, were both on hand Wednesday at Lowes Island as the young Raiders upended two-time AA Dulles District tournament champion Briar Woods by three strokes.

The Raiders 313 earned them their second district tournament title (the other coming in 2005) and bid to the Region II tournament next week in Crozet. Briar Woods, which had won back-to-back district tournament titles (2006 and 2007) and regular-season titles (2007 and 2008) also qualified for the regional tournament. The Falcons shot 316 Wednesday.

The Raiders didn’t have the best golfer on the course Wednesday, that belonged to Broad Run with senior Kevin Yerks firing a one-under par 71 on a day when the next lowest score belonged to LC sophomore Brantley Kushner with a 76. Freedom — which will send three individuals onto regionals and finished a strong third at 322, three shots better than BR at 325 — had the third-place medalist with junior Alex Choi shooting a 77

Potomac Falls (338), Heritage (354), Dominion (357) and Park View (371) rounded out the team scoring.

A cluster of athletes shot 78 including defending district champion senior Michael Birmingham of Briar Woods and his teammate freshman Adam Ochs. A pair of Raider shot 78, sophomore Kevin Cook and sophomore Andrew Brenneman, as did Freedom junior Tyler Blake.

In a five-way playoff for the Nos. 4-6 medal spots, Birmingham birdied the first playoff hole to take fourth and then Blake defeated Cook on the second playoff hole to take fourth with Cook fifth.

All players shooting 80 or better, and not on the BR or LC rosters, qualified as individuals for the regional tournament. That group included Yerks and teammate senior Tyler Campos (80), the three Eagles, Choi, Blake and Nick Lee (80). The sixth and final individual spot was decided in a playoff with Potomac Falls senior Michael Tondi defeating Heritage freshman John Conley on the first hole. Both had shot 81 for their rounds.

LC’s victory was built on a group of scores between 76 and 81 and all posted by sophomores (Brenneman, Cook, Kushner) and juniors (Jon Youst and Dan Jackson).

The Raiders victory was similar to two seasons ago when LC came into the tournament as the favorite to advance to regionals along side regular-season champion Potoamc Falls, only to have young sophomore-led team of Falcons win the tournament.

That BW group had run the table since then, taking the 2007 regular-season and tournament titles followed by the 2008 regualr-season tournament title. BW, however, stumbled a bit in the last week of the regular-season, falling to Broad Run in a dual match and then just nipping Heritage to clinch the regular-season title.

Leesburg (Sept. 23, 2008) – There was a lot on the line Tuesday night in the volleyball showdown between rivals Heritage and Loudoun County. The Raiders were risking their 38-game win streak and first place in the AA Dulles District was up for grabs and, finally, simply, bragging rights were at stake.

Undefeated Loudoun County, playing before a fired-up “Raider Riot” student section calmly collected all the marbles — the winning streak, first place in district and braggin’ rights — with a nearly flawless 25-11, 25-18, 26-24 sweep over the Pride. LC is 11-0 overall and finishes the first half of the district slate at 7-0, while Heritage falls to 6-1 in district and 14-2-1 overall.

For the defending AA state champion Raiders, it was a 39th straight victory and a seventh straight win over neighbor Heritage. It was a loss to Heritage, back on Sept. 25, 2006, that set off the Raiders current run which includes victories in 57 of 58 contests, with the lone loss coming in the 2006 AA state title game.

“We were ready to dominate,” said LC junior setter Robin Marsala.

LC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set and only trailed several times on the evening and the Raiders were never down by more than a single point in the match.

“It is a big rivalry … sometimes you let your emotions get in the way,” said Heritage coach Carmel Keilty who said her team, which swept a very good AAA Battlefield squad on Saturday, didn’t bring its “A” game Tuesday.

LC, meanwhile, showed off an “A+” mentality for much of the first two sets as the Raiders were firing on all levels, from the front row to the back row.

The Raiders pulled out all the stops for this match as it was “Yellow Day” at school and a huge Raider crowd showed up to cheer on the team. From Spirit Wear to clips from old sports movies, the Raiders were ready to roll and they did, scoring the first four points to start the match.

With sophomore Rachel Arigo (4 kills, 5 digs, 3 blocks, 13 points, 2 aces) serving, senior Shaylin O’Connell (13 kills, 4 blocks) smashed down the first attack at the net to set the tone. Senior Katie Gloe (10 digs) tooled the block for the next point and O’Connell and junior setter Robin Marsala (25 assits, 11 points) combined for the double block on the next point to make it 3-0. Arigo then rolled an ace off the net and the LC crowd was going wild as Heritage was forced to call an early time out.

O’Connell was on early in the first set and then junior Juliane Hanna (11 kills, 10 digs) went to work as she took some absolutely great sets from Marsala and just destroyed the ball.

Everything was going the Raiders way that even a bump set from senior Katie Martin (8 assists, 5 points) found senior Rochelle Latka (4 kills) who set the ball over and into the center of the Heritage defense for a ****.

Another Hanna smash and it was 13-4 LC with the Pride calling time out again.

Heritage sophomore Lian Bernett had a nice night for Heritage, with unofficially 11 kills and sophomore Emma LeMaitre also added 10 kills but Heritage was reduced to trading points with LC while trailing by double digits.

O’Connell put up a monster solo block to make it 20-11 and sophomore libero Kathleen Horvath went back to serve and didn’t stop until the Raiders had clinched it 25-11. During the final run, Horvath had an ace, Arigo threw up a block, junior Emily Vandegrift (6 kills) poached a stray dig and then Heritage sent two attacks wide.

Heritage was able to post small leads in the second set but never by more than a point with the final lead coming at 7-6. During this stretch, Bernett, LeMaitre and freshman Christine Kamis all were scoring off some nice service by Pride freshman setter Stephanie Yokoyama.

Gloe used the block to tie it at 7-7 and then Arigo crashed another ace off the net to make it 8-7. O’Connell registered a **** for a two-point lead but Heritage tied it on a LC net violation and then an ace by Yokoyama.

A great rally was finished by O’Connell to make it 10-9 and Marsala sent a nice serve for a 11-9 LC lead. Heritage fought back with Bernett and O’Connell trading kills and Bernett scoring again to make it 12-11 LC but the Pride could never find that run that would put them back in the lead.

The best Heritage could do was tie the match at 16-16 after MeMaitre’s struck for a nice ****.

LC’s go-ahead point was one-of-a-kind as Arigo went to get a ball in the backrow and she sent a free ball with her back to the net and the attempt skimmed the net and found the floor on Heritage’s side for a Raider point.

Heritage fought back for one more tie, at 18-18, with junior Skye Young powering a **** and then Bernett firing away with her left-handed quick release.

A well-timed time out for LC found O’Connell, the senior leader in the middle, scoring to stop the Pride run and then O’Connell, with Marsala serving, went back-to-back-to-back as she threw down a short set for a **** and then scored on another block.

Vandegrift went with back-to-back kills and not even a Heritage time out could slow the run as Marsala served out for the 25-18 victory with sophomore Sammy Dormio earning the last two kills. With O’Connell and Hanna for defenses to watch, the likes of Latka, Vandegrift, Dormio, Gloe, and Arigo have free reign at the net to pace LC.

The third set is probably what many fans had in mind when looking at the match-up as it was a thrilling 26-24 game.

Again, however, Heritage could never get a comfortable lead and the Pride trailed until going ahead with a late run. Down 19-16, senior Ashley Scott had a **** adn then LeMaitre and Kamis struck to tie it at 19-19. With Scott serving still, LC had back-to-back errors and it was 21-19 Heritage.

Hanna got a point back but the intense LeMaitre used the block for a 22-20 Heritage lead. Dormio was set to make it 22-21 and a Pride attack wide tied it at 22-22. LC went up as O’Connell used a little offspeed on the attack. LeMaitre again came up big to tie it at 23-23.

Heritage earned a set point after a LC error but after a Raider timeout the Pride couldn’t take advantage on the next serve and it was tied at 24-24 with the fans on both sides rocking the rook off.

Marsala was inserted to serve and she tracked down a pass near the LC bench and sent a twisting set all the way to the far side of the net where Dormio used it to beat the block for a 25-24 LC advantage. On the next point, Vandegrift had a **** to finish the rally and the evening as LC celebrated a sweep.

Volleyball: Battle for Leesburg Tonight!

Off The Net — 2008-09-22

As we near the halfway point of the Dulles District season, the standings are starting to become a little clearer.

The biggest surprise of the season so far has got to be the terrific play of the Heritage Pride.  They seem to have been a little off everyone’s radar at the beginning of the season, but they’ve made everyone sit up and take notice.  I expected them to be a terrific defensive team, but questioned whether they would have the offensive firepower to hang with some of the bigger guns in the district.

They have proven to be a much stronger team than many people expected.  That’s why my “Match of the Week” this week will be the battle for First Place, as well as the Battle for Leesburg bragging rights, between the Heritage Pride and the undefeated Loudoun County Raiders.  This match, Tuesday night at Loudoun County, is one that people have been pointing to to for a few weeks now.

I know both teams will be pumped up and excited, and I’m sure the crowd will be too!  Similar to the rowdy match in the Panther Pit last week between Potomac Falls and Dominion, this will be a relatively local match for the visiting team, and I expect a full house of both Raider and Pride fans to show up and make a lot of noise.  The young Heritage team has stood up well to the pressure so far, let’s see if they can keep it up in a hostile gym Tuesday night.

Another key match this week will be the contest between Potomac Falls and Heritage on Thursday night at Potomac Falls.  The Panthers will be seeking some revenge over an early season loss to the Pride.  The Panthers have been hot lately, and it should be an exciting match Thursday night in Sterling.

Last week’s Match of the Week was a key match between Potomac Falls and Broad Run.  The Panthers came out fired up, and used a strong serving game to keep the Lady Spartans off-balance for most of the night, winning the match in 3 sets.  Some people were saying this was the biggest win for the Panthers in recent memory.  It’s hard to argue that, given that this was a Dulles District contest and the importance it plays in the standings, and also considering how long it had been since the Panthers have been able to defeat the Spartans.  This one was right up there with the big PFHS win over Loudoun Valley a couple of years ago that won’t be easily forgotten.  Don’t worry though, Spartan fans, your team is too talented and too well coached to be down for long!

The Panthers also played an exciting match last Tuesday night against Dominion.  This one was another battle for local bragging rights in Sterling.  The Dominion crowd made the trek across Sterling and fans from both schools were making a lot of noise throughout the match.  The Panthers eventually prevailed in 4 sets, but not before dropping the first set and facing some pretty tense moments in the others.  Dominion has a good team, don’t overlook the Titans this season!
