Ashburn (Mar. 26, 2007)  – Chris Jessop went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, had a highlight film play at shortstop and closed the game on the mound for the save to lead the Broad Run High School baseball team to an 8-4 AA Dulles District victory over Heritage Friday.

At the on start it appeard the Spartan’s 3-game winning streak might end as the Pride’s Grant Groves opened the game with a sharp single to left field and moved to second on a stolen base.  Next up was Senior Joey Donofrio who followed with a deep single to left center scoring Groves.  Donofrio scored later on in the first on an RBI single by Austin Weaver putting the Pride up 2-0 at the end of their first at bat.  The Spartan’s quickly responded however with back to back singles by Stephen Hershey and Chris Jessop.  Both Hershey and Jessop scored on ensuing sacrifices by Vince Johnson and Ryan Diviney to knot the score 2-2 at the end of the 1st inning.

Both starting pitchers, Jacob Martinez for the Pride and Trey Brocke for the Spartans settled down in the second inning allowing no runs to score.  In the 3rd, the Pride once again jumped ahead on Weaver’s second RBI of the evening, driving in Sophomore Brenton Peters for a 3-2 lead.  Once again the Pride lead was short lived as the Spartans rallied, this time scoring 4 runs on five a barrage which included hits from Jessop, Johnson, Diviney, Cole Shain, and Brocke which gave the Spartans a 6-2 lead at the end of 4 innings.

The Spartan’s then turned to defense thwarting a series of valiant attempts by the Pride to score including an ESPN top 10 double play from SS Chris Jessop, and a deep throw from Stephen Hershey with a diving tag at the plate by catcher Tommy Meier.  Defensively the Spartan’s committed only one error on the game. The final come back attempt came at the top of the 7th inning, with the Pride loading the bases and the tying run at home plate.  Jessop was brought into close and struck out the final Pride batter of the night to gain his first save in his first varsity appearance on the mound.
