The Skinny

Thursday Sept. 20, 2007

All games 7:30 unless noted

Note: Back by popular demand, the LPS Monkey gives his take on the games … all rankings are LPS Power Rankings

No. 5 Loudoun Valley (1-1) @ No. 2 Stone Bridge (2-1)

Last week: Valley defeated Woodbridge, 24-7; Stone Bridge defeated Marshall, 35-0

The
Skinny: The Vikes have never beaten Stone Bridge but they came closes
two years ago in Ashburn when only a last second drive gave the
Bulldogs a 17-14 win. Last year was all SB in Purcellville, winning
35-14. Both teams missed a key RB last week as Valley defeated
Woodbridge without Brian Oden. They need Oden’s breakaway speed if they
are to have a chance to upset SB. The Bulldogs have been playing
without projected top back Daniel Allen, who has been out with a high
ankle sprain the entire season. Jeron Gouveia has been averaging over
16 yards a carry so LV will have to know where he is at at all times on
the field. He has throw for a touchdown this year in addition to
running and catching scores. After a rough spot i the opening week,
junior Nick Sheehan took over at QB for the Vikes and he gives them a
good running threat at that spot. Both defenses have been opportunistic
this season so look for some key interception and fumble returns
tonight.

No. 3 Broad Run (2-0) @ Brentsville (1-1)

Last week: Broad Run was idle; Brentsville lost to Heritage, 29-26

The
Skinny: This is a tough match-up for the Tigers after last week’s
heatbreaking loss to Heritage. Brentsville returned a kick off for a
touchdown with just over a minute left to take the lead 26-22, only to
have the Pride’s Nick Cadwell return the following kick off for a score
to give Heritage the win. BR can control the ground against Brentsville
with its bevy of backs. Give BR the advantage as the Tigers had the
short week while the Spartans haven’t played in almost two weeks.
Brentsville squeezed past Freedom so this will be the Tigers third
straight game vs. a LOCO team. So far Justin Donnelly has been the big
back for Brentsville.

No. 7 Dominion (1-1) @ Tuscarora MD (0-2)
Last week: Dominion lost to Millbrook 34-22; Tuscarora lost to Middletown 35-6

The
Skinny: Both schools opened in 2003 and are nicknamed the Titans. Go
figure! Both teams didn’t fare too well last week in the rain.
Dominion’s top concern right now has to be the passing game which has
accounted for just 34 yards in the opening two contests so look for the
Titans to work on that. Freshman Deandre Reaves has elusive moves for
Dominion and Todd Lancaster has been a big play back on both offense
and defense for the Loudoun 11. Tuscarora was shut out in its opener,
21-o at Frederick, so any offense would be appreciated by the home fans.
Extra Point: Link to a newspaper story on Tuscarora’s last game.

King George (2-1) @ Freedom (0-2)

Last week: King George lost to Monticello 28-21; Freedom was idle

The
Skinny: The Eagles are looking for a victory to avoid going 0-3 before
the Dulles District schedule opens. King George QB Shane Houck threw
for 215 yards last week so the Eagles will have to play well in the
secondary. Freedom had some extra time to prepare for the this game
with last week off and KG is facing a short week with the Thursday play
date.
