Leesburg (Oct. 4, 2007) – Last year the Loudoun County and Heritage volleyball teams had an epic series of matches, meeting twice in the regular season, in a special one-game playoff after tying for the AA Dulles District regular-season title, in the district finals and then in the Region II finals. The Raiders had the upperhand in four of the last five meetings and that trend continued Tuesday as Loudoun County swept the Pride in their gym, 25-14, 25-23, 25-15.
The undefeated Raiders (7-0, 13-0) have not lost a regular-season match since falling to the Pride (5-2, 9-3) a year ago, a streak now of 22 matches. Overall LC, the 2006 AA state runner-up, has now won 31 of 32 matches and has a record of 40-3 since the start of 2006.
In Tuesday’s match, leading a balanced Raider attack were junior Shaylin O’Connell who had 11 kills and three blocks. Other key contributors included senior Marguerite Hanna (7 kills, 10 digs, 15 service points, 6 aces), senior Morgan Petkovich (10 kills, 7 digs, 9 points, 3 aces), sophomore Juliane Hanna (10 kills), junior Sara Reilly (3 kills, 4 solo blocks), junior Kerry Sarver (24 assists, 5 digs), junior Rochelle Latka (12 assists), and senior Rebecca Dancy (26 digs, 4 aces).
Heritage was led by junior Ashley Scott (9 kills, 7 digs, 5 points), senior Gaby Galvan (7 kills, 5 digs, 5 digs), freshman Lian Bernett (10 points) and sophomore Megan Beckwith (16 digs).
On Thursday, LC hosts Park View while Heritage’ s next match is also against the Patriots, next Tuesday in Sterling.
