Leesburg (May 16, 2008) – The Broad Run High School boys track and field team captured their second consecutive AA Dulles District Track & Field championship as expected on Thursday in Leesburg, out-distancing runner-up Potomac Falls, 150 to 130.

The girl’s competition, however, held just a bit of a surprise as the Heritage Pride girls came from behind to knock off defending district and AA state champion Park View.

As the final team scores were announced the Pride girl’s team huddled just past the start / finish line. As the second place team was announced (Park View) the Pride team and fans erupted as Heritage was called to accept the girl’s team trophy.

Heritage finished with 124.50 points to Park View’s 111. Potomac Falls was third with 92.

“I think our depth really paid off,” Heritage girls coach Katie Boring said. “We didn’t win all the events, but we had a lot of second and third place finishes. Park View is an amazing team; our relays set records to help us pull out the victory. It was a total team effort.”

The Pride girls 4×100 and 4×400 relays each set meet records. The 4×100 clocked at 50.29 while the 4×400 ran 4:03.05.

In all Heritage had 11 different girls score points in the meet with Bria Nunley (triple jump) and Jazlynn Finney (long jump) the only individual winners. Finney and Devon Anderson-Farmer led the way for the Pride with Finney also taking second in the 200, third in the 100 and she ran on the 4×100.

Anderson-Farmer was second in the high jump, second in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles and ran on the 4×400 team. It was in the 300 hurdles that a big swing took place in the meet as Kenice Brown and Anderson-Farmer finished 2-3,  just ahead of two Patriot runners. That was 14 points for Heritage in that event and six for Park View. Switch around those points and Park View would have won the meet 119 to 116.5.

Of course there were points to be gained and lost in every event. Heritage had a knack all day in picking up solid third and fourth place finishes.

Also scoring points for Heritage were sisters Emma  and Hannah McLaughlin with Emma fourth in the 200, third in the 400, tied for sixth in the high jump and a member of the 4×100, while Hannah was second in the 400 and on both the 4×400 and third place 4×800 relay. Angie Cerimele was fourth in the 800 and on two relays, Jordan Gold placed third in the 3200 and fourth in the 1600.

Brown was also on two relays and Nunley was on the 4×100. Amy Taylor and Amanda Ward were on the 4×800 and Charnele Hearns was fifth in the shot put.
The Broad Run boys used a combination of throws, jumps, and speed to capture their second consecutive boy’s title.

“Our jumpers scored the highest total in history of our school yesterday with 56 points,” Broad Run boys coach Mike Hitzges said. “We also set a record in throwing with 26 points. Coaches John Casele and Jessica Read did a great job and those competitors from yesterday were a big part of our victory today. It was a total team effort with our athletes and coaches.”

Broad Run had 11 athletes score in individual events including Rashawn Hugg who was first in the 200 and 400 and runner-up on the 100, Sam Saidi with second place in the high jump and long jump and third in the triple jump, James Escano with a first in the shot and second in the discus and Nick Salgado who was third in both hurdle races and fourth in the triple jump.

The Spartans also had a good day from the middle distance “Eric’s” … Eric Nelson second in the 800 and Eric Hiatt fourth in the 800. They teamed with Kevin Clark and Terry Taylor to take the 4×400 relay.

Several meet records fell over the two day event. Heritage High School will be hosting next week’s Region II track and field championships on May 21 at 1 p.m.

“We are very excited about hosting the Regionals next week,” Boring said. “I think some of the athletes that excelled today will also stand out in the Regionals.”

Notes: Jennifer Weatherly captured three events, winning the 100, 200 and 400 meters with a record 59.29 in the 400 … Brooke Thompson won both the 100 and 300 hurdles … The 800 meters featured a fabulous finish with PF’s Ariana Jones nipping her teammate Christina Lee and Park View’s Megan Barnes at the tape. Jones clocked 2:22.48 to Lee’s 2:22.70 and Barnes was at 2:22.76.
