Sterling (Aug. 17, 2008) – For Dulles District golf teams Monday’s 2008 Cheers Sports Open at Algonkian is a chance to go up against AA power Briar Woods High School which has captured all but one district event dating back to the 2006 distirct tournament. The Falcons shot 294 last week to win the first district mini tournament by nine strokes and a win Monday, in what serves as the second Dulles mini tournament, would put BW in a comfortable position to repeat their regular-seasond district title.

Monday’s event, however, also includes AAA Loudoun Valley and Stone Bridge, making it the only golf tournament on the season to feature all 10 Loudoun schools. So expect bragging rights to be on the line as the Falcons look to match scorecards with Valley which opened the season with a 291 to win the Curly Licklider at Shenandoah Valley. BW finished third at that 23-team tournament with a 298.

Last year Valley brough a split squad to the Cheers tournament as they were also competing elsewhere but the Vikes are fielding their “A” line-up Monday in promises to be some exceptional prep golf. Valley followed its Licklider win with a victory in the Battlefield District first mini tournament.

Monday’s event will include medals for individuals finishing first through sixth as well as closest to the pin and long drive contests. Cheers Sports is providing all awards and lunch to the players.

The Falcons line-up Monday does not include defending district champion Michael Birmingham, but BW is plenty deep with six players shooting 77 or under in the win at Raspberry Falls in the first Dulles District mini tournament.
