(Oct. 23, 2008) – It’s the biggest night of the volleyball season for Loudoun teams as two titles are on the line Thursday and Loudoun Valley can move a step closer to adding the AAA Cedar Run District title to its regular-season championship.
In the AA Dulles District, Heritage (12-1 in district) hosts Loudoun County (13-0) on the final day of the regular season with the district banner at stake. If Heritage can stop the Raiders 47-match winning streak then the two teams will be co-champions for the second time in three seasons and a special one game playoff will be held, most likely Monday, to determine the district tournament’s No. 1 seed and automatic regional qualifier.
If LC wins, then the Raiders will make it three straight district titles. The last time LC lost in the regular season was early in the 2006 campaign to Heritage. The Raiders then beat the Pride to end the regular season, captured the special playoff, went on to defeat Heritage again in the district and regional tournament finals and the Raiders season only ended with a loss in the AA state finals.
In AAA action, Stone Bridge can claim the Liberty District title with a win at Langley tonight. Both teams are 6-0 in district play heading into this final match. Stone Bridge will host the Liberty District tournament next week with quarterfinal action Monday (only one match with other high seeds hosting), semifinal doubleheader Tuesday and the finals on Thursday.
Langley captured the Liberty District and Northern Region titles in 2007 and finished runner-up in the AAA state tournament.
The Saxons handed Loudoun Valley one of its only two losses on the season. The Vikings (19-2) travel to Battlefield tonight to face the host Bobcats in the Cedar Run District semifinals.
