Football: Briar Woods 30, Heritage 9

Ashburn(Oct. 24, 2008) – Ray Taliaferro had a record-setting night with 221 yards rushing on 26 carries and three scores, including an 86-yard run, and the Falcon defense refused to allow a touchdown for the fourth time this season as Briar Woods defeated Heritage, 30-9, Friday night in AA Dulles District action.

The win on Senior Night for Briar Woods, which this year celebrates its first four-year class at the new school with 23 seniors on the roster, solidified a return trip to the Region II Division 3 playoffs for the Falcons and kept the team’s district title hopes alive as BW improved to a school record-tying 7-1 overall and 4-1 in district.

Heritage’s hopes of the playoffs vanished as the Pride finished the game with star running back Ross Madison on the sidelines on crutches. Madison 69 yards on eight carries before leaving the contest.

The Falcon defense intercepted Heritage three times in the contest with Bryan Mahoney, Jake Ashton and Andrew Davidson all getting picks.

Mahoney and Davidson combined for 16 tackles. Since losing 29-0 to Broad Run a month ago, the BW defense has allowed just 29 points and three touchdowns in the last 16 quarters.

Heritage was able to move the ball in the first half but had to settle for three Josh Thiel field goals.

And even though it was Senior Night for BW, the game marked the debut of freshman Edwin Mends at quarterback and he went 6 of 11 for 45 and added 29 yards rushing.
