Sterling (Oct. 25, 2008) – It was “High Noon” at Park View High School Saturday and the Dulles District volleyball co-champions Heritage and Loudoun County held a special playoff showdown to decide the district tournament’s top seed and which team would get an automatic bid to the Region II tournament. As good as both teams were in the regular season, heading into postseason, their could be only one “sheriff” and somebody would have to play the “deputy”.
The AA defending state champion Raiders, long the area’s “fastest draw” before the Pride shot down Loudoun County’s 47-match winning streak on Thursday night, recovered nicely and swept Heritage in a match highlighted by a first set that had all the drama of Dodge City.
Heritage (18-3) saved two set points in the first set only to have Loudoun County (20-1) save three consecutive set points. Heritage then saved yet another set point only to have LC close out the exhausting game with a 31-29 victory. The Raiders then took that momentum from the emotional win into the next two sets, winning 25-16, 25-21 for the sweep.
While both teams are officially co-champions of the Dulles District, only LC is assured of a regional bid and Heritage must win next week’s district tournament (or finish runner-up to LC) in order to advance. The tournament opens with quarterfinal action at higher seeds on Tuesday: No. 8 Park View at No. 1 LC; No. 7 Freedom at No. 2 Heritage; No. 6 Dominion at No. 3 Potomac Falls; and No. 5 Broad Run at No. 4 Briar Woods. All matches will start at 7 p.m.
The tournament, officially sponsored by DigitalSports.com, will conclude at Park View with the semifinals Thursday and finals Saturday.
