Vikes Open Strong with Dual Win and
The Valley Wrestling team won it’s home opener last Thursday against Central Square High School from New York and and followed it up by winning the Dudley Martin Classic at Brentsville High School.
The Vikes won won the Dudley Martin Invitational over the weekend by defeating seven other schools. According to coach Troy Mezzatesta, “The entire crew wrestled tough and literally pinned their way to another tournament championship.”
The tournament awards was delayed as Loudoun Valley and Crosby of Richmond stood deadlocked and tournament officials had to go to pin criteria. The Vikings had eight more pins than Crosby and were declared team champions.
Freshman David Garvis went undefeated and was the Tournament MVP.
Mezzatesta reported that he “was pleased with the end result, but feels that the team has a lot to work on to compete in the tough Cedar Run District and a (Northwest) region that includes two-time defending state champion Colonial Forge. The win shows our potential and it was nice to see all the hard work we’ve put in pay off, by winning a tournament title this early in the season. The team is actually very young, as only one member of the starting 14 is a senior (at this point).”
