Breaking News: Williams Named New Heritage Football Coach

Leesburg (Feb. 11, 2009) – Heritage High School Athletic Director Ron Petrella confirmed Wednesday that the Pride has hired offensive coordinator Steve Williams as the new varsity football coach.

Williams takes over for Wes Driskill who stepped down at end of the fall season after leading the Pride since the school opened in 2002. Williams, with Heritage since it opened, started out as a JV football coach for two seasons before moving to the varsity staff under Driskill.

“We are very excited,” said Petrella. “Not only is he an excellent teacher in the building but he has great rapport with the players. When we beat Park View for the first time ever, both (Williams) and Wes were doused with Gatorade.”

Williams previously was the varsity wrestling coach at Heritage for three seasons and coached the boys soccer team for four seasons, stepping down after the 2007 season.

According to the football schedule that Petrella released, Williams will have his work cut out for him as the Pride are moving up to AAA classification next season from AA and will have an incredibly tough schedule that features area power Stone Bridge, defending AA Division 4 champion Broad Run, Prince William powers Hylton, Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson and a quality program from the Fredericksburg area, Colonial Forge. And if that wasn’t enough, the Pride will play AAA Division 6 runner-up Osbourn not once, but twice, and face Loudoun’s largest school, Loudoun Valley, also twice.
