Leesburg (Jan. 30, 2009) – Loudoun area basketball players officially had back-to-back days off this week with the snow and ice but that didn’t stop the Park View High School boys team from getting together on their own to keep their skills sharp and it paid off Thursday as the Patriots never trailed after the opening quarter and rolled to a 70-58 AA Dulles District victory over host Heritage.
The boys win made it a sweep for Park View as the girls opened the night, behind Rachael Miller’s four 3-pointers and 23 points, with a 55-44 win over the Pride. Karita powered inside for 16 in the win and Megan Barnes added nine for Park View. Necole Sterling led Heritage with 18.
In the boys game, Park View had four players finish in double figures with Donnie Royer hitting for a career-best 16 points. Royer, who was relentless inside, especially on second chances, was supported by Marcus Freeman (14), Josh Jones (12) and Kenny Smith (12).
Heritage had nine players who scored in the contest but seemed a bit flat on the offensive end. Leading 17-14 heading into the second quarter, Heritage went cold from the field and Park View 9-0 to take a lead they would not give up.
Several times Heritage fought back to get close, within two towards the end of the second quarter, within three midway through the third, and within three with five minutes to go in the game, but each time, Park View had the answer with a series of quick baskets to put the lead back out of reach.
Smith made a nice move inside followed by a Jordan Owens jumper and then a Freeman drive that resulted in a three-point play to turn the 55-52 game into a 62-52 Park View lead with three minutes remaining.
Freshman guard Mo Berchie led the Pride with 13 points, six of which came in the closing moments. Stephen Shockley, fighting foul trouble early, didn’t score in the first half but hit two treys in the third quarter and finished with 10 points for Heritage.
