Identical Twins

By: Dan Sousa

Leesburg (Nov. 14, 2006) – Two high school girls volleyball teams loaded with talented club players that needed a one-game playoff to decide their regular-season district championship and met again in the district tournament finals and the regional tournament finals.

Sounds familiar to Loudoun County and Heritage volleyball fans but the two teams in question are Grafton and Jamestown, the two Bay River District teams that the Dulles District teams will face tonight in the AA state quarterfinals.

Until now, the most competition each of these identical twins has had, has been each other but tonight’s matches will provide a new challenge as Region II champion Loudoun County (25-2) hosts Jamestown (23-4) at 7 p.m. and Region I champion Grafton (26-1) hosts Heritage (21-6) at 7 p.m.

State Tournament

Quarterfinals – Tuesday Nov. 14

Heritage at Grafton

Tunstall at Cave Spring

Jamestown at Loudoun County

Brookville at Abingdon

Semifinals Fri. Nov. 17 at 5 and 7 p.m. at the Siegel Center in Richmond. Finals Sat. Nov. 18 at 5 p.m.
Both hosts tonight have had the upper hand in the postseason with Loudoun County and Grafton each 3-0 vs.. Heritage and Jamestown, respectively.

Grafton swept Jamestown 25-18, 25-12, 25-17 to win the Region II title Saturday with all-region players Alison Blasingame (16 kills, five blocks), Kristen Tunno (21 kills, 21 digs) and Kellie Brumbaugh (34 assists) on their game. The Clippers only loss this season has come in the regular season to Jamestown.

The Eagles have lost four times all year — each time to Grafton. Jamestown was hurt Saturday by the absence of middle blocker Danielle Stolarksi who was out with an injured kneed but she is expected to play tonight in Leesburg. Jamestown is led by Tara Sutton and Becky Stowers.

Except for losses to AAA Loudoun Valley, Heritage and County have only lost to each other but the Raiders are 3-0 in postseason against the Pride with the latest win coming Saturday in the Region II final.

County’s 16 consecutive match win, 25-17, 25-17, 19-25, 25-19, was another display of a balanced attack with six players with seven kills or more – Rebecca Dancy (11), Marguerite Hanna (10), Morgan Petkovich (10), Amanda Arbogast (8), Shaylin O’Connell (7) and Paige Knudsen (7).

Heritage countered with its big two hitters combining for 23 kills – Rachel Young (12) and Alana Rudkovsky (11). Pride setter Katherine Buttery had 40 assists and Young added six blocks.

Arbogast had a season-high 11 combined blocks (six solo).

Dancy’s all around match included 11 digs, 12 service points including three aces and two block assists. Hanna added nine digs and four combined blocks and 10 service points. Petkovich had five combined blocks and O’Connell had seven for the Raiders.

Sophomore setters Katie Martin and Kerry Sarver combined for 43 assists with 24 and 19 respectively.  Martin also had 10 service points and eight digs. Sarver had eight service points and three aces.

Defensively, Michelle Puckli and Sara Reilly each contributed 12 digs.

For Heritage, Lauren Bulka had 16 digs and Buttery (21), Young (16) and Rudkovsky (13) combined for 50 more digs.

Loudoun County had an easier getting into the regional finals than Heritage as the Raiders cruised to a 25-10, 25-13, 25-16 victory over Sherando. The Pride had to survive a five-game match on the road, defeating James Wood in Winchester 20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 15-25, 15-8.

O’Connell led the way against Sherando with a season-high 13 kills to go wtih seven block assists. Petkovich had 12 kills followed by Hanna (11 kills), Arbogast (eight kills) and Knudsen (seven kills). Martin had a season-high 31 assists despite the match going just three games. She also had 14 points and three aces.

Dancy led the defense with 13 digs.

In the Pride’s five-game regional semifinal win, Young had 20 kills and 26 kills while Rudkovsky added 15 kills and 13 digs. Buttery had 44 assists and 10 service points. Kelly McFarland served 13 points and had four blocks and Ashley Scott added 10 kills.

The Plains (Nov. 13, 2006) – The Heritage High School girls cross country team raced into history Saturday as the Pride became the first Dulles District girls team to ever finish in the top three at the AA state meet. Also in the AA girls race, Potomac Falls freshman Christina Lee finished 10th with Dominion junior Bekki Misanin right behind in 11th. Loudoun County freshman Julie Strange was 17th.

The Pride scored 154 points to finish three points ahead of Region II foe Handley (157). Nationally ranked Blacksburg (31) and Brentsville (41) finsihed 1-2. The tough Great Meadows state course and an unseasonably warm day took its toll on many runners Saturday.

Heritage’s finish matched the Potomac Falls boys squad third place finish from 2004. Since the Dulles District started in 2000, three teams had gone to state prior to this year with Potomac falls fourth in 2003, Loudoun Valley fourth in 2001 and Potomac Falls seventh in 2000.

The Pride may just be starting their state run as Heritage had three freshman scoring Saturday including Hannah McLaughlin (21:00.46) 34th, Ashleigh Dyson (21:48.71) 52nd, and Amanda Ward (22:16.33) 70th. Heritage also relied on some string senior leadership as Bini Kronenberg (21:26.39) 41st, and Jayde James (21:45.50) 50th finished their careers strongly. The Pride will have two other runners back next year from the 2006 team with sophomore Lauren Stephens (22:22.91) 77th and junior Ellyn Moulton (23:08.85) 97th.

Lee ran a 19:58.62 with Misanin less than a second back at 19:59.09. Strange came in at 20:23.21.

On the boys AA side, Potomac Falls sophomore Josh Hardin was 22nd with a 17:11.48 and Dominion senior Brian Gould was 28th at 17:28.04. In the boys AAA race, Gidey Teferra was off his usual pace, finishing 77th at 17:43.38.

It is time for one final kick for the Heritage High School girls cross country team and six other area runners as the season concludes Saturday at the VHSL state meet at the Great Meadows course in The Plains.

The Pride are the first girls squad to make the state meet since Potomac Falls qualified in 2003. Heritage may just be warming up as the young team had three freshman score while placing third at the Region II meet last week at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville.

Freshman Hannah McLaughlin (20:18.13) was 18th overall at the regional meet followed by seniors Jayde James (20:18.99) and Binin Kronenberg (20:38.31), 20th and 30th respectively. The three runners at ran the same course last month at the Albemarle Invitational and all three shaved between 37 and 48 seconds off those times at regionals.

Even more interesting is that a Pair of Pride freshman, Ashleigh Dyson and Amanda Ward, who didn’t run at the AA Dulles District meet won by Heritage at Oatlands, finished 38th and 48th.

Brentsville won the regional meet with 39 points followed by Handley (122), Heritage (130) and Monticello (145). The Pride figure to have a strong shot at a top five state finish Saturday.

Christina Lee

Potomac Falls

The Heritage girls won’t be running alone as three area individual runners also qualified for the AA meet – Potomac Falls freshman Christina Lee, Dominion junior Bekki Misanin and Loudoun County freshman Julie Strange.

District champion Lee was fifth overall at regionals with a 19:20.38 time. Misanin (19:34.42) and Strange (19:44.38) came in eighth and 11th respectiviely. Considering the strength of the Region II meet, all three runners should challenge for top 20 finishes Saturday.

In the regional team standings, Potomac Falls, Briar Woods and Park View finished 8-9-10 in the 16-team field.

 Josh Hardin

Potomac Falls

On the boys side, Potomac Falls sophomore Josh Hardin (16:23.62) finished 10th to qualify Saturday but his Panther team just missed, coming in fifth with 151. The four teams advancing from Region II were Brentsville (57), Western Albemarle (79), Sherando (119) and Louisa County (133).

Hardin will have company as Dominion senior Brian Gould grabbed the 15th and final slot for the state meet with a 16:33.31 run at regionals.

Heritage was eigth at regionals followed by Dominion 10th and Loudoun County 11th.

Gidey Teferra

Stone Bridge
Loudoun will have one runner in the AAA meet as Stone Bridge senior Gidey Teferra finished a strong 10th at the Northern Region meet at Burke Lake with a 16:20. Bulldog senior Michael Pandish was 29th (16:56) as Stone Bridge came in 10th in the team competition.

Stone Bridge sophomore Stephanie Paradis finished 24th in the girls regional race.

Due to the rainfall this week, the state course at Great Meadows is off limits to course previews on tomorrow. Teams can come to Great Meadows to buy t-shirts and see the course, but cannot run or walk it.

Here We Go Again …

By: Dan Sousa

(Nov. 9, 2006) – We aren’t sure if Punxsutawney Phil will make an appearance but it sure seems like Groundhog Day as the Heritage and Loudoun County girls volleyball teams will meet yet again — this time on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at County with the AA Region II title on the line. It will be the fifth meeting this season between Heritage (21-5) and Loudoun County (24-2) with the Raiders having taken the last three matches including wins on the final day of the regular-season on Oct. 26 to clinch a tie for the Dulles District title, on Oct. 27 in a one-game play0ff to claim the district tournament top seed and then in the district tournament finals on Nov. 4.

Heritage Wins Nailbiter Against James Wood

Winchester (Nov. 9, 2006) – The Heritage girls volleyball team took advantage of its veteran leadership and a strong fan following that made the trip west on Route 7 Thursday night to win a tense five-game AA Region II semifinal at James Wood. The Pride fell behind early but Heritage, led by the strong play of senior Alana Rudkovsky fought back for a 20-25, 25-13, 25-23, 15-25, 15-8 victory that advances the team to Saturday’s regional final and into next week’s state tournament.
