Madigan and Stambules Named U.S. Lacrosse High School All-Americans

By Dan Sousa:

(July 22, 2008) – Recent grads Eric Madigan of Broad Run High School and Dean Stambules of Heritage were both named 2008 U.S. Lacrosse High School All-Americans.

Both Madigan and Stambules were instrumental in the Spartans and Pride advancing to the Dulles District finals and the Region II playoffs over the past two seasons.

Madigan was the Dulles District Player of the Year in 2007 and he followed that up with 101 points in 2008 on 58 goals and 43 assists. He broke the Broad Run career scoring record for goals with 180, surpassing future Sacred Heart teammate Evan Morgan on the last game of the regular season. Morgan still holds the record for total career points.

Stambules, who will play at Denison this coming year, finished his four-year career at Heritage as the schools all-time points leader with 152 goals and 99 assists. He also had 193 career groundballs and was named the Dulles District Player of the Year in 2008.

More on Madigan:

Ashburn (July 24, 2007) – Broad Run High School rising senior Eric Madigan has made an early commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Sacred Heart starting in 2008.

Madigan, who scored 62 goals and had 41 assists and was the AA Dulles District Player of the Year in 2007, will join former teammate, Evan Morgan, who was named the AA Dulles District co-Player of the Year in 2006.

Morgan, with 13 goals and 11 assists, was named the Pioneers Rookie of the Year after his just-completed freshman season and was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s All Rookie team. Morgan and Madigan teamed to help the Spartans capture the AA Region II title in 2006 and make a trip to the state playoffs. In 2007 Madigan helped the team repeat as regular season district champions but the Spartans were upset by Heritage in the district tournament finals and then fell just short in the regional playoffs.

Mark Madigan, Eric’s father, is president of Eastern Loudoun Lacrosse and he says Eric is the first player from the league, which started five years ago, to earn a Division I scholarship and he is also the first player to be named All-American, with official word from US Lacrosse expected to come in several weeks.

“It is pretty cool,” said Mark Madigan. “After attending camps, Eric had about 10 to 12 offers with four or five from Division I schools and the rest from top Division III schools. Sacred Heart is only going to take two attack guys so he will have a great chance to play.”

Madigan plays club lacrosse for FuZe Team Blue and in three years for the Spartans he has scored 122 goals with 75 assists in three high school seasons.

Sacred Heart with about 5,800 students is located in Fairfield, Conn. The Pioneers play in the competitive CAA which had four Top 20 teams this past year, Towson, Drexel, Delaware and Hofstra. Coach Tom Mariano will be entering his 12th season at the school next year.
