Heritage Alone at the Top as Pride Defeats Park View, 61-52

 Basketball sponsored by cheers sports

By Satnam and George Khalsa

Sterling (Jan. 30, 2008) – Last Thursday afternoon there were four teams tied for first place in the AA Dulles District. That evening the four teams played each other and Park View and Heritage emerged victorious, setting the stage for last night’s first place showdown between the two survivors.

Heritage, which lost a one-point heartbreaker to Park View at home on Dec. 21, avenged that loss with a 61-52 victory Tuesday. The win improved Heritage to 7-2 in district and 9-7 overall while Park View drops to 6-3 and 11-5. The Patriots sit one game back of the Pride in the standings along with Potomac Falls, which defeated Loudoun County Tuesday. The Pride are looking for a third straigth district title, having gone 14-0 in 2005-06 and then 11-3 last year to share the title with Potomac Falls.

The Pride utilized careful ball handling and good shooting to overcome a physical Patriot team that likes to create fast break opportunities from turnovers. Park View led at the half 29-25 Tuesday, having forced seven Heritage turnovers, but in the second half, the Pride turned downright stingy, turning the ball over only once.

Virtually eliminating the fast break from the Patriot arsenal, Heritage proved to have the superior halfcourt offense.

During the halftime break Heritage head Coach Mark Mallisham assured the Pride that their shots would begin to find the hole.

“Then we got so hot [in third quarter],” said Mallasham, “I was ready to call the fire department.”

Heritage senior forward Preston Findley connected on three treys in the quarter as Heritage outscored the Patriots, 20-9. Findley finished the evening with 21 points and seven rebounds.

Park View’s Brett Dufford did all he could to keep the home team in the game scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds. But it was the three-point shot that did the Patriots in as 12 of Heritage guard Steven Shockley’s 14 points came by way of the three and in the end the difference in three-point scoring, 24 for Heritage and 15 for Park View, was equal to the winning margin.

Basketball Power Rankings

Basketball sponsored by cheers sports

Thru games played Mon. Jan. 29, 2008

Boys

1. Loudoun Valley (12-3)

Last ranking: 1st

Last week: Defeated Heritage, 51-39; Defeated Battlefield, 51-48 OT; Defeated SB, 68-46

Valley staked its firm claim on first by holding Heritage to nine points in the first half. When Valley held Stonewall to four points in the first half, the Cedar Run District sent out a CSI team to investigate the width of the baskets. (CSI Nokesville to be exact). This week it’s all Willie Nelson for Valley as they are “On the Road Again” … and again … and again. Hey, the life they love is makin’ baskets with their friends … sorry Willie.

This week: tonight @ Osbourn Park; tomorrow @ Liberty; Friday @ Fauquier

2. Heritage (8-7)

Last Ranking: 4th

Last week: Lost to Valley, 39-51; Defeated Potomac Falls, 66-53.

Most people would put Park View ahead of Heritage heading into tonight’s big match-up in Sterling. Yes and most people wouldn’t wake up their college roommate for three consecutive months with a Chuck Barris impression … but we found it funny. Here’s the deal, no team has hard a tougher out-of-district schedule than the Pride. We are betting it pays off in the postseason. Either way, we will be back with more STUFF! (yes, that was a Gong Show reference)

This week: @ Park View tonight; @ Broad Run Friday.

3. Park View (10-4)

Last ranking: 2nd

Last week: Defeated Loudoun County, 73-67; Defeated Fauquier, 58-57.

The Patriots are like a box of … sure, you thought we were going to pull out that old Forest Gump cliche … OK, try this on: The Patriots are like a trip thru the drive-thru in Ashburn … you never know what you are going to get … Will it be the PV team that has won four straight including a nice win over County last week or the team that blew a big lead in the second half vs. PF and was out of synch the entire game against BR? Thomas Mulabah is a force inside but Marcus Freeman might the key to this talented team.

This week: vs. Heritage tonight; vs. Potomac Falls Friday; @ Washington-Lee Saturday.

4. Loudoun County (12-4)

Last ranking: 3rd

Last week: Lost to Park View, 73-67.

We would say the Raiders are in a big game tonight at PF … but then again, with the Crowded House that is the Dulles District standings … all the games from here on out are big. Speaking of Crowded House … did we mention that tonight’s game is in the Panther Pit?!?

This week: @ Potomac Falls tonight; @ Dominion Friday.

5. Potomac Falls (9-6)

Last ranking: 5th

Last week: Lost to Heritage, 66-53.

First the Panther Pit tonight for PF and then the Panthers are off to the snake pit … facing Single A power Clarke County on the road and then over to Eastern rival Park View. We think Alex Hogue of PF does the best Kobe Bryant, coming off a screen, falling backwards, dead center 3-point shot in the area.

This week: vs. County tonight; @ Clarke County Wednesday; @ Park View Friday.

On the Bubble: Dominion (on the rise!) and Broad Run  (hot and cold).

Girls

1. Loudoun County (14-2)

Last ranking: 1st

Last week: Defeated Park View, 73-67 .

We are very proud of the fact we stuck County with the Runnin’ Raiders moniker back when they were about 6-2 and they haven’t lost since! We also came up with these other monikers that didn’t stick: Briar Woods Patch Kids … LoCo Raiders … Valley Green Giants … Stone Cold Bridge … Legends of the PFalls …

This week: Potomac Falls tonight; Dominion Friday.

2. Freedom (11-5)

Last ranking: 4th

Last week: Defeated Dominion, 58-39.

Don’t look now but the Eagles have won seven of eight with the only loss to County and they were in that contest. Kelsey Buchanan isn’t just tall … she is tall and can run the court like a guard. Broad Run will need to stop her tonight is a big, big game for both teams.

This week: @ Broad Run tonight; Briar Woods Friday.

3. Broad Run (9-6)

Last ranking: 2nd

Last week: Lost to Briar Woods, 46-26

This may be the biggest game the Spartans play all year when they host Freedom tonight. It comes on the heels of BR’s shocking fourth quarter against Briar Woods last week when they were held to two points. BR needs this game, especially with next week’s trio of County, Park View and Stone Bridge waiting. BR’s Alexis Campbell will provide the leadership tonight.

This week: Freedom tonight; @ Heritage Friday.

4. Park View (9-6)

Last ranking: 3rd

Last week: Lost to County, 72-58; Defeated Seton, 56-47.

If County’s offense is in a league of its own right now … then the Patriots offense surely has its own division … defense is the key for PV as they have given up 58 or more points in seven games this year, going 2-5 in those contests. Otherwise, they are 7-1.

This week: @ Heritage tonight; @ Potomac Falls Friday.

5. Briar Woods (9-6)

Last ranking: not ranked

Last week: Defeated Broad Run, 46-26; Defeated Thomas Johnson, 45-38.

Falcons pull off biggest upset in several seasons in the Dulles District with last Thursday’s win over the Spartans. Kim Bell is a rebounding machine and Krysta Gardner has more fight in her than just about any other player in the district but when the other players started knocking down outside shots … watch out for the Falcons. Tonight, however, is a trap game for BW as the Falcons surely are looking forward to Friday’s meeting with rival Freedom.

This week:  @ Dominion tonight; @ Freedom Friday.

Pride Gives Panthers a Dose of their Own Medicine

 Basketball sponsored by cheers sports

By: Dan Sousa

Leesburg (Jan. 25, 2008) – It was patented Potomac Falls High School boys basketball  on display Thursday night: swarming fullcourt defense, balls swiped and returned for easy layins, hustle rebounds, a fast transition game finished with a precise 3-pointer.

Only this time it was host Heritage applying the pressure, and the Panthers falling prey, as the Pride used fullcourt pressure  to go on a 10-2 run at the end of the third quarter.

“We tried to flip the script on them in the third quarter,” said Heritage coach Mark Mallisham.

Heritage’s quick strike — Preston Findley scored seven points in 32 seconds including two layins off steals and a trey — led to a 11-point margin that Heritage nursed home to a 66-53 victory.

The win set up a showdown next Tuesday in Sterling between the Pride (6-2, 8-7) and Park View (6-2, 10-4) with first place in the AA Dulles District on the line. The Patriots knocked off Loudoun County on Thursday, 73-67. In December, Park View escaped from Heritage with a last-second, 55-54 win.

Findley finished with a game-high 19 points and was just one of four Pride in double digits with Chris Broderick (15), Curtis Rustin (13) and Mike Massey (10) adding the depth. The fifth starter, Ross Madison, was a new insert into the starting line-up and drew high praise from Mallisham for stepping into the point guard role.

It was not only an important win for Heritage in the district standings but the Pride were coming off back-to-back losses at home and they wanted to avoid a three-game slide in front of the home fans. Those losses included a one-point, last-second defeat to County and then a poor showing against Valley in which the Pride managed just nine first-half points.

“This was a great bounce-back type of game,” said Mallisham. “It was very important for our kids to get their swagger back.”

Potomac Falls got 17 from Alex Hogue and 10 apiece from Willie Mears and Greg Woodlief, but the Panthers never looked like the team that rode into the game on a six-game winning streak during which they went from 0-2 in district to tied for first at 5-2. Exam week left PF just a step off.

“We never found our flow tonight. We weren’t smooth tonight,” said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes.

Dulles District Swim Meet Set for Claude Moore Tonight

swimming sponsored by snow Swimming

Girls Race: If the meet psych sheet is any
indicator the strong Potomac Falls High School team could crack 400
points on their way to winning a third straight title. Briar Woods, the
2007 runner-up, and Heritage appearing to be in the battle behind
PF. The Pride have had some injury issues early in the season but are
now healthy so they could surprise some.

Boys Race:
Broad Run, undefeated in the dual meet season, has to be the favorite
coming in but Potomac Falls lurks as a dangerous team ready to defend
its six-year winning streak. Dominion will figure in the chase for the
title and Heritage could be a spoiler in many races.

Best Bet for a Record:
LC’s Jeremy Begun is swimming well under the meet record in the 100
backstroke set by Begun’s teammate, Ryan Loweth, last year. Loweth swam
a 56.78 while Begun has a seed time of 55.60. Loweth just nipped Begun
at the wall in last year’s district race as the Raiders touched 1-2.

Why there Won’t be Many Broken Records:
The past crop of swimmers in the district has really set the bar high
with the likes of Matt McLean and Andy Mears of PF, Lauren Ritter of
Dominion, Bryan Durazo of Heritgae, Suzanne Schwee and Megan Newell of
Stone Bridge, Nicole Poltash of Broad Run and Tom Maddux and Mary
Boland of Loudoun Valley. That is an elite group of swimmers so any
record broken Friday will be well earned.

Fantastic Field:
The girls 50 freestyle features seven swimmers who have already posted
a state qualifying time. Expect this to be one of the most exciting
races of the evening.

Double Duty: Callum Lawson
of Dominion (100 and 200 free) and Kirby Shook of Potomac Falls (50
free, 100 back) have a good shot at bringing home two individual first
place finishes.

Panther Power: Besides Shook,
the PF girls could see Carla Harvey (200 IM) and Caylyn Tate (500 free)
also on top of the podium. Expect Panther Devin Bowers on the boys side
to challenge for first in the 500 free. The Panthers are also a threat
to win each of the relay races on both the boys and girls sides.

Pride Gives PF a Dose of Its Own Medicine

basketball sponsored by cheers sports

Leesburg (Jan. 25, 2008) – It was patented Potomac Falls High School
boys basketball  on display Thursday night: swarming fullcourt defense,
balls swiped and returned for easy layins, hustle rebounds, a fast
transition game finished with a precise 3-pointer.

Only this time
it was host Heritage applying the pressure, and the Panthers falling
prey, as the Pride used fullcourt pressure  to go on a 10-2 run at the
end of the third quarter.

“We tried to flip the script on them in the third quarter,” said Heritage coach Mark Mallisham.

Heritage’s
quick strike — Preston Findley scored seven points in 32 seconds
including two layins off steals and a trey — led to a 11-point margin
that Heritage nursed home to a 66-53 victory.

The win set up a
showdown next Tuesday in Sterling between the Pride (6-2, 8-7) and Park
View (6-2, 10-4) with first place in the AA Dulles District on the
line. The Patriots knocked off Loudoun County on Thursday, 73-67.
In December, Park View escaped from Heritage with a last-second, 55-54
win.

Findley finished with a game-high 19 points and was just one
of four Pride in double digits with Chris Broderick (15), Curtis Rustin
(13) and Mike Massey (10) adding the depth. The fifth starter, Ross
Madison, was a new insert into the starting line-up and drew high
praise from Mallisham for stepping into the point guard role.

It
was not only an important win for Heritage in the district standings
but the Pride were coming off back-to-back losses at home and they
wanted to avoid a three-game slide in front of the home fans. Those
losses included a one-point, last-second defeat to County and then a
poor showing against Valley in which the Pride managed just nine
first-half points.

“This was a great bounce-back type of game,” said Mallisham. “It was very important for our kids to get their swagger back.”

Potomac
Falls got 17 from Alex Hogue and 10 apiece from Willie Mears and Greg
Woodlief, but the Panthers never looked like the team that rode into
the game on a six-game winning streak during which they went from 0-2
in district to tied for first at 5-2. Exam week left PF just a step off.

“We never found our flow tonight. We weren’t smooth tonight,” said Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes.

tapped it to Symone Berry who hit a 17-foot jumper with about two
seconds on the clock to send it to OT.  In OT it was tied with about 25
