All-Dulles District Region II Boys and Girls Soccer Finals at Broad Run

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Ashburn (May 29, 2009) – All four Dulles District boys and girls soccer teams still alive in the postseason earned Region II semifinal “road” victories on Wednesday night — even those that had earned the right to host — and sets up an All-Loudoun regional final doubleheader tonight at Broad Run High School.
In the first game tonight at 6 p.m., the Broad Run girls — which moved its 3-0 win over Charlottesville on Wednesday to Park View due to poor field conditions at BR — will host Heritage, which edged Brentsville, 1-0, on Wednesday. In the nightcap, the Broad Run boys — a 3-3 winner at Fluvanna on Wednesday — will host Potomac Falls, which advanced with a dramatic, 2-1, overtime win at Brentsville. All four teams will advance to the AA state tournament next week with the winners tonight getting to host quarterfinals on Tuesday and the losers hitting the road.
The Potomac Falls boys (15-5-1) roll into tonight’s contest on a 9-game winning streak, having not lost since April 28. During that 9-game stretch, the Panthers defeated Dulles District Broad Run (14-6) twice, 4-0 on May 11 and 1-0, in the district semifinals, on May 19. Earlier in the year, Broad Run had the upper hand, 2-1, in a April 14 contest.
The Broad Run boys had the easier path to the finals, scoring early at Fluvanna — in the 13th minute when sophomore Kevin Reitzel flicked a long Paul Ellington throw-in and sophomore Evan Thomas cleaned it up for a goal. It stayed 1-0 Br until 16 minutes remained when the dangerous Ellington, a junior, struck again, this time his throw-in bounced off a defender and into the goal for a 2-0 lead. In the final minute of the contest, BR junior captain Danny Reategui converted a penalty kick for the final margin.
Potomac Falls advanced in a tense game in Nokesville with Panther senior captain Asa Fox scoring with 20 minutes to play in the first half. Brentsville, however, tied the contest wtih just two minutes left before the break. PF thought it had added another Fox goal in the second half but the play was ruled offsides. Fox, however, set up the winning goal in overtime by drilling a shot the Tiger keeper couldn’t handle and junior John Thomas knocked in the rebound with less than four minutes left in the 10-minute overtime.
On the girls side of the semifinals, Broad Run controlled play from start to finish against Charlottesville. Spartan senior captain Holly King took a pass from sophomore Ellie Zoepfl in the 13th minute and then beat three Black Knights and before angling a shot with her left foot that crossed up the Charlottesville keeper and trickled just inside the right post.
Broad Run added a second goal in the second half on a King penalty kick and the final score came off a Valerie Powell throw-in that King took and flicked backwards to Kelly Evans who ran onto the ball into the box all by herself and then calmly slotted the ball past the keeper for the 3-0 margin.
At Brentsville on Wednesday it was the Heritage girls qualifying for the state tournament for the first time since the school opened in 2002-03. The Pride scored the only goal of the game when Alex Mosley netted just her second score of the season in the 14th minute.
According to Pride coach Casey Van Harssel: “Just like their quarterfinal match win at Fluvanna, the Pride kept the pressure on for the reminder of the game and the defense stayed on.z’
Erika Deckard recorded her 6th shutout of the season for the Pride.
Broad Run (19-0-1) has defeated Heritage (13-6-2) three times on the season and has not allowed Heritage a goal: 2-0 on May 21 in the district finals; 1-0 on April 28 on a late Powell goal and 3-0 on March 27.
The Spartans roll into the contest with a record of 43-0-1 since a state quarterfinal loss in 2007.

Updated Playoff Scoreboard: Thursday and Friday AM

Region II Brackets
note: Here is how the Region works … each of the three disricts gets two teams in regionals (a district champion from the regular season and then one team from the district tournament). The two district champions with the best records get byes in the quarterfinals (A1 and B1). A1 plays in the semifinals the winner of match-up between the second teams from the other two disricts (B2 vs. C2). The district champion with the third best record has to play in the quarterfinals against the second team from the district with the best record (C1 vs. A2). The winner of that match then plays B1. Confused … hmmm … LPS Monkey did this all by himself and six cups of coffee.

Loudoun Soccer Teams Sweep Four Regional Quarterfinals

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
(May 26, 2009) – Loudoun Soccer teams were a perfect 4-for-4 on Memorial Day in regional quarterfinal action.
At home, Potoamc Falls (7-0 over Orange) and Broad Run (1-0 over Sherando) advanced with boys soccer AA Region II quarterfinal wins and on the road, the Heritage girls (1-0 over Fluvanna) advanced in Region II action and the Loudoun Valley girls (3-1 over Colonial Forge) won a Northwest Region contest.
As a result, five Loudoun teams will take to the fields on Wednesday in regional semifinal action: In Region II, Broad Run girls will host Charlottesville at 6 p.m.; Heritage girls will travel to Brentsville for a 5 p.m. contest followed by the Potomac Falls boys against Brentsville at 7 p.m.; and the Broad Run boys will travel to Fluvanna for a 6 p.m. match. In Northwest Region action, the Loudoun Valley girls will host Forest Park at 7:30 p.m. in a doubleheader with the Vikings girls lacrosse hosting Battlefield for the regional title in the early game.
Region II Boys Soccer Quarterfinal: Potomac Falls 7, Orange 0
Potomac Falls coach Dave Gryder summed it up best after his team rain-soaked romp past Orange Monday: “We are in a groove.”
The Panthers have now won eight straight contests, with the last loss coming on April 28. Since that time, PF has gone from 6-5-1 to 14-5-1 and the Panthers have out-scored opponents, 25-3 during that stretch, allowing just a single goal in three games with five shutouts including three straight.
Dulles District Player of the Year Asa Fox had the hat trick Monday, scoring first in the 17th minute, splitting two defenders and then getting off a shot as he was being knocked to the ground that it powered high off the fingertips of the keeper and into the goal.
Just two minutes later, junior Kevin King fielded a ball just outside the 18 and whirled around for a lofting shot to the far post that the keeper had no chance to save. King scored twice in the win.
PF’s made it 3-0 before the half when Conor Shanosky was taken down in the penalty area and he then converted the penalty kick.
The rain started falling towards the very end of the first half and then the second half was played in a steady downpour with Fox connecting two more times before he and almost all the Panther starters finished the contest safely on the bench.
Sophomore defender George Echart notched the final goal for the 7-0 win.
PF can qualify for the state tournament with a win Wednesday at Brentsville.
Region II Boys Soccer Quarterfinal: Broad Run 1, Sherando 0
Broad Run junior Danny Reategui showed Monday why he is one of the most gifted soccer players in the area as he used his creative acumen to score the game’s only goal as the Spartans edged a determined Sherando team which pressured until the final minute to get the equalizer on the muddy field.
Reategui’s goal came early in the second half and he split two defenders and then faked inside, and cut outside on a third defender near the six. The Sherando keeper appeared to have a good angle on the Spartan but Reategui squeezed off a shot that hit the near post and then made a clothes line across to the far post and rattled into the back of the net.
Sherando would have tied it in the final 10 minutes by Spartan sophomore keeper Paul Hegedus came up with a big-time save in the rain, diving to his left and deflected a low shot out of bounds.
Broad Run improves to 13-6 on the season and can qualify for the state tournament with a win Wednesday on the road against Jefferson District champion Fluvana.
Region II Girls Soccer Quarterfinal: Heritage 1, Fluvanna 0
The Heritage girls soccer team has scored just 29 goals on the season but the Pride defense has allowed just 20 goals and that formula has led the team to within one game of the state playoffs with a 1-0 win at Fluvanna on Monday.
The only goal of the game was scored by Kaitlin Thomas (9) in the 11th minute.  The Pride kept the pressure on for the reminder of the game and the defense did not allow many solid chances for the Flucos.
Erika Deckard recorded her fifth shutout of the season for the Pride.
The Pride travel to Brentsville for the regional semifinal tomorrow at 5 p.m. where the girls will play for the spot in the state tournament.
Heritage is 12-6-2 on the season.
Northwest Region Girls Soccer Quarterfinal: Loudoun Valley 3, Mountain View 1
Loudoun Valley freshman Tabitha McHale scored twice and Amber Cook had the go-ahead goal as the Vikes defeated Colonial Forge on the road to advance to the regional semifinals where they will host Forest Park on Wednesday.
Loudoun Valley improves to 17-2 on the season.
McHale scored in the 24th minute from Tyalor Payne. After the home team tied it in the 51st minute, Cook put in the go-ahead just four minutes later and two minuites later McHale struck again for the final margin.l

Potomac Falls Girls Grab Region II Track and Field Title

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Louisa (May 21, 2009) – Although the Potomac Falls High School girls captured the school’s first regional track and field title on Wednesday at Louisa, it didn’t come as a shock to Panther coach Courtney Cornwall.
“I ask my kids to be the best version of themselves every time they compete. That’s exactly what they do and our record this year proves it,””
Junior Christina Lee led the girls’ team with outstanding performances in both the 800 and the 1600 meters. Personal records were set by Nicole Fauteux in both hurdles, Jenn Richards in the shot put and Allie Dazcowski in high jump.
Lee not only took first in the 800 and 1600 meters but she led a 1-2-5 finish in the 800 that accumulated 20 of Potomac Falls 65.5 points. Ariana Jones finished just behind Lee, clocking 2:21.89 to Lee’s winning 2.21.69, and Kaitlyn Hunter took fifth.
In the 1600 it was another pulse-racing finish as Lee crossed at 5:11.30, just ahed of Western Albemarle’s Mattie Webb at 5:11.46 and Loudoun County’s Julie strange at 5:11.76. Strange was victorious in the 3200.
The Panthers finished 9.5 points clear of Western Albemarle and that was after the Warriors piled up 30 points in the pole vault — an event that Loudoun County athletes are not allowed to partcipate in.
Besides Lee, Fauteux was the biggest individual point getter for PF with a pair of third place finishes in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles. Richards took third in the shot for PF and the Panthers got points in the 4×800 relay with a second place finish — and that came after a Panther runner was jostled on the third leg — and a second place finish in the 4×400 with a 4:02.65, just behind Heritage’s winning 4:02.28.
“Our girls relay teams are always the most exciting for us because those girls give everything they’ve got and then a little more!,” said Cornwall.

Josh Hardin and Ryan Hagen led PF’s boys’ team in the 1600/3200 meters and 800/4×800 meters, respectively. Although Hagen couldn’t be his freshest for the Regionals 800, Cornwall says the senior is confident he will be at States and is excited for the opportunity to compete again.

“We have some tough races ahead of us. If they go to States with their heads and their hearts in it, I’m confident they’ll give us some impressive performances,” said Cornwall.
Samantha Phun of Freedom had a surprising second in the 100 meters with a 12.73. Hannah and Emma McLaughlin went 2-3 in the 400 for Heritage. The Pride girls, winners at the Dulles District meet, took fourth with 47 points, three back of Skyline.
On the boys side host Louisa ran away with the meet with a whopping 116, more than doubling runner-up Fluvanna at 54. Heritage boys, like the Pride girls district champs, finished fourth with 51, just 1.5 back of Charlottesville.
Kaise White of Freedom continued his stellar 400 meter season with a first place run of 49.26 and T. J. McPhaul of Heritage was first in the 300 meter hurdles and went 2-3 with teammate Dan Dykema in the 110 meter hurdles.
There were some great distance races on the boys side with PF’s Hagen nipped by Western Albemarle’s Tyler Stutzman in the 800 meters, 1:53.41 to 1:53.54. PF’s Hardin was edged by WA’s James Howard-Smith in the 1600 meters, finishing at 4:21.68 to 4:20.79.
Hardin also took second in the 3200 meters, runner-up to WA’s Kyle Satterwhite.
The Panther boys won the 4×800 with Hagen joining Sean Campos, Andrew Mott and Alvaro Morales.
Briar Woods’ Omar Omokodian captured the discus with a season-best throw of 162-08.
