Former Heritage Track Star Bradley Medals at ACC Indoor Meet

Track and field sponsored by potomac River Running

(Mar. 15, 2008) – There may not be an indoor track and field season for Loudoun athletes, but that hasn’t prevented the locals from shining in big college indoor meets. At the ACC Track and Field indoor championships at the University of North Carolina on Feb. 28-March 1, former Heritage star Les Bradley, now at Miami, finished third in the 60-meter hurdles and former Broad Run standout Stephanie Garcia, now at Virginia, took seventh in the 3000 meters.

There were more local connections at this meet as the Fanning sisters, Tasmin and Jessica, who both ran at Loudoun Valley before moving to Western Albemarle, were strong in the 3000 with Tasmin taking first with a 9:23.50 and Jessica just missed a medal, taking ninth with a 9:39.88. The sisters then were half of the Virginia Tech distance relay that took second with a 11:25.27.

Bradley ran an 8.05 in the prelims, ranking him fourth place behind teammate Cory Nelms going into the finals. Bradley then ran a personal-best  7.93 seconds in the finals to obtain his first college medal and making him All-ACC. The smooth race was good enough for third place.

At Heritage, Bradley only competed outdoors as Loudoun does not offer an indoor track and field season for its athletes like Fairfax County and other areas in the state.

Bradley said “he has learned a lot and gained a great deal of experience and that he is looking forward to the outdoor season.” He is now getting ready for the outdoor season as his first meet will be March 22 at the University of Miami.

Another Heritage track star, Nick McLaughlin, now a freshman at Virginia Tech, ran a 1:56.33 in the 800 to place 13th.

Salem (Mar. 8, 2008) – Loudoun will have four wrestlers medal at the AA state meet as Heritage’s Jimmy Jurado (140), Potomac Falls’ Paul Rowane (119), Heritage’s Justin Smith (119) and Loudoun County’s Tyler Stevens (145) all advanced late Friday in the consolation bracket to the medal rounds Saturday.

Each wrestler can finish as high as third in the state with three straight wins Saturday. A win in the consolation quarterfinals and then a loss would put them into the fifth place match and a loss in the consolation quarterfinals would send them to the seventh place match.

At 119, Rowane edged Jacob Childress of Orange, 4-3, and Smith defeated Kyle Broda of Brookville, 11-3. For Rowane, it was a big reversal of fortune as he had fallen to Childress, 6-1, at the Region II meet.
