Softball Friday Round-Off

By: Dan Sousa

Briar Woods scored all of its runs in the first inning and coasted to a 7-0 win over host Heritage Friday night in Leesburg. The Falcons (9-5, 6-5 Dulles District) earned their school-record fourth straight victory and won for the fifth time in its last six games.

Briar Woods did all of its damage with two outs in the top of the first.
Heritage retired the first two Falcon hitters before six of the next seven batters singled. Freshman Kasey Ball, freshman Jillian Olson and sophomore Kate Fowler had consecutive RBI singles, and, after a fielder’s choice failed to produce an out, freshman Alex Fierszt added another RBI single to make it 4-0. Sophomore Holly Dominguez then drilled a three-run double to cap the scoring.

The seven-run cushion was more than enough for Fowler, who allowed just three singles and struck out nine in her second straight complete-game victory.

Senior Megan Stejbach, sophomore Caitlin Blalock and Fierszt had two hits each.

Heritage Hands Broad Run Boys Lacrosse First Loss on the Season

 By: Dan Sousa

Ashburn (May 1, 2008) – The Heritage High School boys lacrosse team spoiled Senior Night at Broad Run Wednesday by handing the Spartans their first loss on the season with an impressive 17-14 AA Dulles District victory.

The Pride, which knocked BR off last season in overtime in the district tournament finals, blew open a one-goal game at the half with a 5-1 run in the third quarter and Heritage led 17-11 with two minutes left in the contest.

The district race is now essentially a three-way tie with Broad Run (6-1), Heritage (5-1) and George Mason (4-1) all tied in the loss column. BR finishes with Potomac Falls on Thursday while Heritage has Freedom Thursday and Briar Woods on May 5. GM played Park View Wednesday, takes on Briar Woods Thursday and then LC on Saturday.

Pride keeper Tyler Barton had a huge night with 33 saves and defensive leader Kyle Startsman held Broad Run’s high-scoring senior Eric Madigan to just one goal until the Spartan broke loose for three goals in the final two minutes.

Bryan McCarthy (3 goals, 4 assists) led a balanced Pride scoring attack that raced down the field in the key third quarter. In all, six Heritage players scored multiple goals including Peter Walsh (2 goals, 2 assists), Dean Stambules (2 goals, 2 assists), Rusell East (3 goals, 1 assist), Nick Cadwell (2 goals) and Cameron Carey (2 goals). Chris Rossie, Chris Broderick and Nik Smith also added goals against a BR defense that had not allowed more than nine goals in one game this season.

Connor Forman was a bright spot offensviely for BR with seven goals on the game.
