LPS 2008 XC Preview: Can Anybody Stop the Panthers?

Please see below for video interviews

LPS Cross Country coverage sponsored by Potomac River Running

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Content Editor

(Sept. 5, 2008) – Can anybody stop the Panthers in 2008? That really has to be the question as Potomac Falls High School returns the top runners on both the boys and girls side — with Josh Hardin and Christina Lee looking for their third straight AA Dulles District individual titles — and both teams are deep enough to be considered threats in both the Region II and AA state meets.

In fact www.milestat.com ranked the Panther boys No. 2 and the Panther girls No. 4 in their preseason AA state rankings. Of course PF is not going to rest because they look good on paper … the boys, in particular, have some sour memories to the 2007 finish as the team, after winning its seventh straight Dulles District title, could not get out of regionals, finishing fourth and losing the final AA state spot in a tiebreaker.

“I know there are expectations but you never know until you put the shoes up on the line,” said PF coach Charles Null. “We should be verfy strong in the boys this year, primarily because of the seniors we have returning.”

In adddition to Hardin, who dropped lacrosse in the spring to concentrate on running fulltime and ran a 15:33 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 5K, the Panthers have also have Ryan Hagen, Robert Mott and Brian Robinson returning.

The PF girls did move on and take fifth in the state, finishing behind Blacksburg, Brentsville, Millbrook and Hidden Valley. Of course both Brentsville adn Millbrook are in Region II and once again, winning the Region II meet may be as hard as winning the AA state meet.

“The girls last year were young. The benefit this year is we have a lot of surprises,” said Null who said that he has girls out this year that have played other sports in the past such as volleyball and soccer.

A key will be keeping Lee, who missed a good portion of the spring season due to injury, healthy. Melissa Saunders and Shannon Brady are just two of the Panthers back to support Lee.

“(Lee) seems to be better now,” said Null. “Injuries are a major factor. If your No. 1 and 2 go down, it is a whole new ballgame.”

Loudoun Valley did well in its first AAA season in the Cedar Run District, with the girls taking second and the boys third. The girls advanced to the AAA state meet, but only after a scoring error was corrected.

In state’s, Lee, now a junior, was fourth individually in the AA race with a 18:24.42 run. Hardin was 14th with Heritage’s Jesse Saladan taking 42nd. Stone Bridge’s Stephanie Paradis was 21st in the AAA race with Valley’s Colleen Kramer 70th. The Viking girls took 15th as a team.

Big Meets: Great Meadows tomorrow was to be a big meet but it has been canceled due to weather. That leaves Oatlands on Sept. 20 in Leesburg, Octoberfest on Oct. 4 atg Great Meadows and Glory Days on Oct. 11 at Bull Run as the meets with the most local teams.

AA Dulles District Capsules

Briar Woods

Outlook:
Falcon coach Eric Callender reports, “Both teams have grown considerably and we have a lot of new faces on varsity. I think we’re set up for our best season to date for both teams and should make Regionals for the boys and girls. On the girls side we get back a lot of runners who were missed last season due to injury but have been All-District in the past (4 returning All-District runners). On the boys side, we have added 4 new Junior boys to our Varsity team and the best freshman boy I’ve coached so far at BW. This group is VERY talented but inexperienced in racing – so we’ll see how the season starts this week.

Districts/Regionals: Girls: Potomac Falls is probably the favorite after winning last year and returning so many good runners. I think a few other teams in the district will really challenge them this season, including Heritage and possibly us. On the girls side our District is slowly becoming one of the best in the state with 4 teams ranked in the top 10 in Virginia AA end of last season. Boys: Potomac Falls has won the district 7 straight years I believe and this is probably the best group they’ve had to date coming back (at least since I’ve been here). They return 4 very good Senior All-District runners. They will be VERY difficult to catch this year.

Runners to Watch: Girls: Giana Leone is back after finishing 4th place in the District as a freshman last season. She’ll have a huge improvement this year after a long summer of training (last year she didn’t start running until mid-August so she only really had half a season). Boys: Zach Deaton (Junior) is doing XC for his first season but is already leading the team smashing our 5K time trial loop record by 30 seconds. He’s likely to break the school 5K record early this season.

Runners to Watch in the Future: Sophomore Amanda Presler finished 30th or so at Districts last season but had an amazing Track season this spring, posting one of the top 10 freshmen mile times in the state. She’s been training harder than anyone I’ve seen this summer and will likely be one of our top 3 on the girls team this fall. I would be surprised not to see her in the top 10 at Districts. Freshman Connor Pompilio is the most talented freshmen boy I’ve coached since Pete Dorrel (4:08 miler now) when I was an assistant at Blacksburg HS 4 years ago. If Connor really takes onto the sport watch for him to challenge for the District title in next couple years and possibly be one of the few All-District freshman on the boys side this season.(Editor’s note: Pompilio is already making his mark with a great opening week. See an article that will posted later today)

Broad Run

Outlook:
Spartan coach Michael Williams reports, “This is a rebuilding year.  The athletes are working very had and we hope to be competitive by the end of the season.

Runners to Watch: Boys: Sean Kelly, David Golden, David Ellsworth  Girls: Sarah Smaltz, Meredith Roger,  Riley Newland.
Runners to Watch in the Future: Girl: Maria Wilkins. Boy: Andrew Hayden.

Dominion

Outlook: Titan coach Brian Schmidt reports: “We should be a little stronger this year. We had some good training ove rthe summer with a lot of them going to XC camp. My girls still have some work to do but are improving greatly”.

District/Regionals: The district race will be for 2 – 4. Pot Falls should win the District and after that it is up for grabs. The regional race will be even tighter there is a lot of teams that are very close to each other for 4 spots. Tough to make predictions.

Runners to Watch: Nick Phillips, Nick Sharp, Jimmy Rion, and JT Duke.

Freedom

Outlook: Coach Eric Olsen reports “The Freedom XC teams (both boys and girls) goals are to be more competitive this season.  Our girls squad took a major step forward last year by qualifying for regionals.  Overall, we have improved, but we will need to work hard this season in a very competitive district.”

Districts/Regionals:
The district race will be very competitive this season, but I think Potomac Falls will be the squad to beat.  They are returning nearly all of their best runners, and as long as they stay healthy, they should be favored to advance all the way to states.

Runners to Watch: Two sophmores: Peter Johnson and Rachel Moffitt. Peter was one of the fastest freshman last year in the district, and Rachel recently had a top twenty finish at the Chancellor Invitational.

Heritage

Outlook: Pride coach Doug Gilbert reports: “Heritage CC looks to build on it’s past success and return to the state meet this year.  On the girl’s side, we return a solid mix of new faces and veteran runners.  On the boys side, last year’s group has been working hard all summer and is looking to compete with the top teams in the district.

Districts/Regionals: Our district continues to look stronger and stronger. It appears to me that they are closing in on being the strongest district in the state. As far as regionals go, our region is tough. Period. On the girl’s side, we are looking at having two of the strongest teams in the nation  in our region, leaving two available spots open for 5 possibly 6 state ranked teams.  Unfortunately, several very strong teams in the state will be sitting at home on the day of the state meet.  On the boys side, the story is much the same.

Runners to Watch: Boys-  Jake Flanagan, Josh Klug   Girls-  Grace Corapi (11:58 2-miler), Casey Sheehan (18th at regions), Hannah McLaughlin (finally healthy!), Jordan Gold (11:57 2-miler),  Lauren Stephens (fit as ever and ready to go!).

Runner to Watch in the Future: Boys – Andy Salzer (fun fact-  last year’s manager) is looking great right now and ready to go! Possible future number 1?

Loudoun County:

Outlook:
Raider coach Courtney Campbell reports: “Boys team returns a strong group of Juniors and seniors and should perform well as long as they maintain a tight pack. Girls team should be strong but we will be relying on possibly 5 or 6 runners in the top 10 who have not done cross country before. This makes for an exciting and interesting to watch year.”

District/Regionals: District looks the same as almost always. Potomac Falls looks very strong and then there is a fight amongst the rest with Dominion guys looking good. The region is once again very strong despite the realignment last year. Our region has 5 teams ranked in the top 10 in the state on the preseason milestat rankings. If not for the realignment we would have 7 of the top 10 so I guess it is an improvement but not by much.

Runners to Watch: On the girls side we return Julie Strange who has qualified for the state meet the past two years and is looking strong in preseason work-outs. Picking a top runner on the boys team is a challenge this year as we have a solid core up front that might change from meet to meet.

Runners to Watch in the Future: A runner to watch in the future is Tommy Curtin who is a sophomore currently running #4 for me and on the girls side there are many to choose from. For now I will pick Rebecca Hinch who is a sophomore out for the first time this year and ran #2 for me in the first meet.

Park View

Outlook: Reports Patriots coach Jim Nosal: “This is a building year. The kids are definitely looking forward to have a good successful year. They are all committed to improving their times”.

District/Regionals: Potomac Falls. Enough said.

Runners to Watch: Tommy Vereb, Kevin Cruz, David Fischer, Sarah Taylor, Lauren Rymer and Megan Barnes.

Potomac Falls

AAA Liberty District

Stone Bridge

Outlook: Bulldog coach Jen Oblas reports “We lost one senior varsity girl, but have some new promising runners, so we hope to be competitive in our district again this season. Our boys are still young, but everyone is returning and ready to improve their standing in the district.

Disricts/Regionals: Our AAA district is always competitive, and the region is even tougher. It is always a fight for the top 4 district team spots.  We have the Monroe Parker Invitational this Saturday with all the Region teams, so it should be a good preview for the season.

Runners to Watch: For boys, Ryan McPoland is running strong if he can stay healthy. For the girls, our returning #1 runner, Stephanie Paradis, is ready to run for a top spot in the district.

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports Content Editor

(Sept. 3, 2008) – It was back to school Tuesday for all Loudoun students and for volleyball players it was back to district play as the AA Dulles District and AAA Cedar Run opened.

In AA: Dominion defeated Freedom in four, 25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16 and Loudoun County made it 30 straight wins and 48 of 49 with a straight set win over Park View, 25-7, 25-9, 25-7. Also, Broad Run and Heritage earned straight set wins with the Spartans over Briar Woods, 25-10, 25-11, 25-16 and the Pride over Potomac Falls, 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.

In AAA: Stone Bridge fell to Robinson in four, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-17; and Loudoun Valley was schedule to open Cedar Run District play on the road at Fauquier.

Loudoun County 3, Park View 0

LC assistant coach Jarod Brown reports:

The Lady Raiders got off to a fast start as they were victorious in their first Dulles District match of the season.  Loudoun County defeated Park View 3-0 (25-7, 25-9, 25-7) as Shaylin O’Connell lead the attack with 8 kills and 2 blocks.  Other key contributors were Juliane Hanna (8 kills), Rachel Arigo (5 kills, 12 service points, 7 aces), Kerry Sarver (12 assists, 12 service points, 3 aces), Robin Marsala (8 points, 4 aces), Katie Martin (11 points, 4 assists), Kathleen Horvath (5 digs).

The Raiders improved to 2-0 (1-0) on the season, after the Freshman and JV teams quickly handled the Patriots 2-0.  The Raiders hit the road as they return to action this Thursday at Potomac Falls.

Dominion 3, Freedom 1

Freedom coach Dave Tsuda reports:

onight the Freedom Eagles Varsity lost 1-3 against the Dominion Lady Titans. The scores were 15-25, 22-25, 25-23, 16-25. The second and third game scores reflected the exceptional teamwork and high energy of this young team. The Eagles setters Morgan Kemp and Kaitlyn LaMantia maintained a strong offensive in both games with kills coming from several players – Jenna Flanigin, Kaitlyn LaMantia, Ebony Weeks, Morgan Kemp, and Kara Phung. Jenna Flanigin was on her mark with several timely blocks and kills against oversets.

The Freedom Freshmen won 2-0. The scores were 25-14, 25-21. The Eagles serving and ball handling sustained their momentum.

he Freedom JV lost 1-2.  The scores were 25-17, 20-25, and 14-16.  The young players on this team are working hard to find their team’s inner core for strength and resolve.

Volleyball: Heritage Sweeps Panthers in Dulles Opener

Check below for photos and video from this match!

Leesburg (Sept. 3, 2008) – The Potomac Falls High School volleyball team has been knocking at the door of the AA Dulles District elite teams the past several years and the Panthers, with 11 of 12 returners, had hoped to step on through in 2008 but if Tuesday’s district opener is any indication … the top teams have that door to the playoffs double-and-triple bolted.

Heritage, which went to the AA state playoffs in 2006 and just missed the playoffs in 2007 while finishing third in a “rebuilding” year, looked like a playoff contender yet again as the Pride swept PF 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.

With freshman setter Stephanie Yokoyama leading the offense with 34 assists, sophomore Emma LeMaitre and senior Ashley Scott each registered five kills. Yokoyama and sophomore Lian Bernett led the Pride’s service game with 12 and nine points, respectively.

In the middle, junior Calleigh Fangmeyer, making her varsity Dulles District debut up from JV last season, had five double blocks and a solo block. In the backrow junior Libero Megan Beckwith made Yokoyama’s life easier with 18 digs.

Potomac Falls was led by sophomore Tori Janowski who had seven kills, an ace, four digs and eight assists. Junior Nicole Fauteux also had a nice all-around match with two aces on 11 service points, six digs, 10 assists and three kills.

Also for PF: senior Kerry Dwyer had 11 defensive saves; junior Alexa Campbell had six defensive saves, one ace and five service points; sophomore Kayla Motheral had three solo blocks and three assited blocks and two kiills; senior Cat Jones had one solo block and one assisted block and four kills and one ace; senior Sara Hibson had three kills and five defensive saves; and senior Annie Reck had two kills.

The win Tuesday followes Heritage’s victory Saturday at the J.E.B. Stuart Invitational where the Pride went undefeated in pool play and then took the host Raiders in the title match.

PF’s week doesn’t get any easier as the Panthers host defending AA state champion LC on Thursday while Heritage travels to Park View.

Heritage 28, South Lakes 21

Reston (Sept. 2, 2008) – South Lakes High School was able to control the clock Monday night, reeling off 55 running plays that rolled up 304 yards, but the Seahawks were not able to hold onto a 14-0 lead as Heritage scored 28 straight points and then held on in the final seconds for a 28-21 non-district, season-opening victory.

JaJuan Jones gained 186 yards on 31 attempts and Brandon Price picked up 94 yards on seven attempts, including an 85-yard touchdown ruin, but the Pride trio of Zach Gordon, Ross Madison and Russell East had enough big plays in them to give the AA school the victory over the AAA Seahawks.

Gordon completed 9 of 13 passes for 166 yards, including a game-changing 29-yard score to East with just two seconds left in the first half. Gordon also had a 33-yard touchdown run in the third quarer that tied the contest and he had a 51-yard completion to Scott Pratz to help set up Heritage’s final score of the night.

Madison, meanwhile, was a difference-maker on both sides of the ball as he gained 88 yards on 11 carries and scored what turned out to be the game-winner on a 15-yard run with 3:28 left in the contest. Madison also had a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter that put Heritage ahead for the first time in the game.

With Heritage leading 28-14 it appeared the game was in hand, but after an incompletion, Price went for his long TD jaunt and it was 28-21 with 3:12 to go.

The Pride were not able to run the clock out as the Seahawks defense stopped Madison two yards shy of a first down on a pass from Gordon on 3rd-and-13. Heritage tried to play it safe by punting instead of gong for it from South Lakes 42 and it almost cost them as Quintin Fortes blocked Josh Thiel’s punt and the Seahawks took over at the 42 with 1:56 left.

South Lakes chose to try and stick with the run, utilizing nine straight running plays and it almost worked as the Seahawks moved the ball down to the Pride 28 on a 20-yard run by Jones with 49 seconds left. On 3rd-and-5 with 22 seconds left, Anthony Devine was stopped just short of a first down as he was brought down on Heritage’s 8. South Lakes did not have any timeouts left and the clock went down to six seconds before South Lakes quarterback Justin Zeller could try and make the yardage but the Pride defense held and Heritage took over for a final kneel-down.

South Lakes ran almos twice as many plays as Heritage in the game, 62 to 36, and after a scoreless first quarter, South Lakes went up with two scores within three minutes of each other. The first Seahawk drive went 13 plays, 12 of them runs, with a Heritage facemask penalty helping. Jones took it into the end zone on 3rd-and-goal from the 4.

Heritage fumbled the ensuing kickoff with Price recovering at the Pride 25. And just five plays later, it was Price doing the honors with a 4-yard TD run to make it 14-0 South Lakes.

Heritage took over at its own 15 with 2:06 to go and Gordon, in his debut as the varsity starter, moved the Pride quickly down the filed. Madison got things started with a 19-yard run followed by a 13-yard pass to David McCarthy that moved the ball just over midfield with 51 seconds to go. Madison picked up three more and then Gordon found Danny Offei for 16 yard, moving the ball to the Seahawk 29 and then Gordon hit East for Heritage’s first score of 2008 with two seconds left in the half.

That play sparked Heritage as the Pride took the second half kickoff and went 60 yards in just six plays to tie the game. Madison started Heritage off in good field position with a 20-yard kickoff return. Madison then went for five and 17 yards. After three short gains by David McCarthy, Cody Beard and McCarthy again, Gordon faked a handoff and kept it himself, rambling 33 yards for the touchdown. Thiel tied it at 14-14 with 9:42 left in the third quarter.

Aft the two teams traded punts, it was Madison’s turn to shine as he picked up a Zeller (2 of 7 for 21 yards) pass and took it to the end zone from 42 yards out. A missed extra point made it 20-14 Heritage with 2:08 to go in the third.

South Lakes then went on another long drive, this time 12 plays, taking the ball all the way to the Heritage 14 before turning it over on downs as the Pride defense stopped Will Johnson on 4th-and-5.

Heritage was able to get out from  under their own goalposts with Madison moving it eight yards, Gordon finding Scott Pratz for 12 yards, Gordon gaining 16 on his own and then Gordon and Pratz hooked up for 51 yards, taking the ball to the Seahawk 14. South Lakes defense stiffened and on 3rd-and-11, Madison fumbled and Hill recovered for South Lakes.

Jus two plays later, however, South Lakes fumbled right back with Aaron McMichael recovering for Heritage on the SL 15. Madison didn’t fool around afer this turnover, eluding tacklers to score on the next play and Gordon hit East for a two-point conversion to make it 28-14 Heritage with 3:28 remaining.

Extra Points: In 2007, injuries to first-and-second string Heritage quarterbacks forced Madison to play QB in the Pride’s loss to SL.
