Wrestling: Potomac Falls Repeats as Dulles District Champs

Leesburg (Feb. 9, 2009) – They may have turned off the lights Saturday night at Loudoun County High School to introduce the finalists for the AA Dulles District wrestling meet, but nobody was in the dark about whom the top team was as Potomac Falls, for the second straight year, wrapped up the team title before the finals even started.
Individually, two seniors added to already sparkling careers as Justin Smith of Heritage became a rare 4-time district champion (103 in 2006, 112 in 2007, 119 in 2008 and 125 this year) and T.J. Julia of Briar Woods claimed his third straight title (103 in 2007, 112 in 2008 and this year). Smith claimed a 7-3 feisty decision over Panther senior Paul Rowane who himself was looking for his third title after winning at 112 in 2006 and 119 in 2007. Julia, meanwhile, edged Park View senior Stephen Penna, 5-3, in another marque match-up.
Perhaps the only thing to rain on the Panthers purple parade was taking just three of the eight finals they appeared in, but otherwise, it was all peachy for PFalls with 195 team points, a sixth district title since 2002, and 11 wrestlers through to this week’s Region II meet which starts Friday at Park View and winds up Saturday.
Briar Woods maximized its efforts in the finals with five individual titles in six championship bouts to slide into second place with 153.5 points, just ahead of Heritage (146.5 points) which crowned the same number of champions as PF, three. Freedom finished fourth with 132.5 points and sent five to the finals with junior Joseph Sheptock claiming the Eagles first ever individual champion with a 5-2 win over Pride senior Jimmy Jurado, the returning champion from 140.
The Pride, fighting injuries and illness much of the season, are sending 10 to regionals, two more than Briar Woods (8) and Freedom (7).
Host Loudoun County, which ran a spectacular, first-class meet which was officially sponsored DigitalSports.com, claimed two champions and will send six to Park View. Park View didn’t have any indiviudal champions but had two in the finals and will have five wrestlers on their home mats this coming weekend. While both Broad Run and Dominion didn’t have any wrestlers in the spotlight Saturday in the finals, they will be represented at regionals with the Titans sending five and the Spartans four.
Four wrestlers claimed their second district titles: Thomas Hulcher of Briar Woods at 125, Ryan Hagen of Potomac Falls at 152, Remington LaKose of Loudoun County at 189 and Ethan Ochs of Briar Woods at 285. Hagen and Mike Girolami of Briar Woods were not only the only wrestlers to record a fall in the finals, but they pinned their way through the bracket. Hagen pinned Jared Beane of Briar Woods in 3:08 and Girolami pinned Roy Stephens of Park View in 1:31 in the 215 finals. Hagen was on the mats for just over eight minutes Saturday and Girolami needed just 7:15 total to dispatch three opponents.
Hulcher, LaKose and Ochs had a much harder time repeating their titles. Hulcher survived two points for stalling in the final period to edge Ryan Snead of Potomac Falls, who had won at 130 last year. LaKose had an even closer match as he trailed Freedom’s Marshall Haas 4-3 with 12 seconds remaining in the match after Haas, trailed 3-1 had escaped and then took LaKose down, wrappinig up the two points just as the wrestlers inched out of the circle. Haas then needed to ride LaKose out as both of the clearly weary wrestlers reset in the center of the mat. Lakose was able to elevate his base and when Haas lost his grip on LaKose, the Raider was able to reverse to go ahead as he slipped Haas into a 3-point near fall with just seconds to go to win 8-4.
Ochs wrapped the night up by shutting down the talented Zach Duffin of Potomac Falls, 3-0, thus avenging a loss to Duffin by fall at the district super quads in January.
Other champions crowned Saturday included Loudoun County’s Tyler Anthony at 103, with a 7-3 win over Nick Rea of Potomac Falls; Jo Jo Koenig of Potomac Falls with a 13-2 major decision over Chuong Le of Freedom at 119; Heritage’s Sean Dunn, seeded fifth, at 135 with a 19-7 major decision over Michael Oswald of Potomac Falls; Potomac Falls 140-pounder Charlie Haislip who won an 18-6 major decision over Mike Surowiec of Freedom; Mike Fleming of Briar Woods at 160 with a 7-2 decision over Robert Giffin of Loudoun County; Heritage’s Kevin James, the lowest seed, at No. 6, to win Saturday with an 8-3 win over Freedom’s Charles Constantino.
Haisilip went in the books with fastest pin of the meet, coming away with a 22-second fall on his way to the finals.

Leesburg (Feb. 7, 2009) – The Loudoun County High School girls gymnastic team won their first ever Dulles District title today.
Loudoun County was led by Senior Vicki Vesecky who took first in the All Around (36.32), the Bars (9.40 – school record), and the Beam (9.375). Freshman Jessica Drews tied Vesecky for second on Floor (8.9), nailed her bar routine to take second (8.975), and came in third in the All Around. Jessie Sheehan took first (9.15) in the vault performing the difficult Pike Tsukahara, which ties Katy Bauers school record.
The Freedom team had an outstanding meet taking second with Lilly Nguyen and Lauren McClure leading the way. Nguyen took second in the Vault (8.70). McClure took second on the Beam (8.60), and fourth on Floor (8.65), Bars (8.50) and the All Around (34.35).
Allie Daczkowski helped Potomac Falls win third place with her first place in the Floor routine (9.25) and second place in the All Around (34.725).

Dominion 66, Potomac Falls 55
The Skinny: Titans clinch first ever basketball title in school history and
just fourth title overall since Dominion opened in 2004. DeAndre Albritton
scored 25 points as Dominion improved to 11-1 in the AA Dulles District. Kevin
Bartnick led PF with 26 points. Congrats to the Titans!
Broad Run 65, Park View 53
The Skinny: Didier Saidi scored 17 points and Kevin McGaughey added 13 points
and seven rebounds as the Spartans closed to within a half game of Potomac
Falls for second place in the Dulles District.
Loudoun County 73, Briar Woods 43
The Skinny: The hottest team in the district this side of
Dominion, the Raiders won for the eighth time in nine games with a 30-point
blowout over the struggling Falcons. Briar Woods came into this contest after
falling to Manassas Park on Wednesday.
Heritage 53, Freedom 43
The Skinny: The Pride win for the second time this week and improve to 5-15 on
the season.
Loudoun Valley 70, Culpeper 45
The Skinny: Django Degree led the Vikes with 14 points, 11
rebounds and five assists while freshman John Yoxthimer added 14 points and six
boards. Connor Trombly dropped 16 points for the Vikes with three assists. The
game was tied at 15-15 when Valley out-scored Culpeper, 19-5, to take command.
In the final quarter, the Valley defense held the Explorers to just three
points. LV travels to Battlefield Saturday evening for a key AAA Cedar Run
District contest.

Freedom 81, Heritage 38
The Skinny: Meixandra Porter scored 26 points and Kelsey
Buchanan and Dionna Scott each added 18 points as the area’s top girls team
rolled on to another victory. Necole Sterling led Heritage with 16 points.
Broad Run 47, Park View 43
The Skinny: Caitlin Hunter led the Spartans with 15 points
despite sitting much of the final quarter in foul trouble. Kailey Phillips and
Haley Johnson hit key free throws down the stretch for BR. Chelsea Gantt scored
eight points in the final quarter. Rachel Miller broke Park View’s school
record for 3-pointers in a career, with her 45th in this game.
Patriots led by seven going into the final quarter but BR out-scored the Pats,
14-3, in the final quarter for the win with Miller making the only field goal in
the fourth for PV. Megan Barnes had 12 points for PV with Miller scoring 11 and
Christina Sheppard scoring 10.
Loudoun County 54, Briar Woods 46
The Skinny: Raider Kerry Sarver
broke her older sister Amy’s single season assist record as she dished out
eight assists to give her 134 on the season, two better than the previous mark
of 132. Kim Bell scored 17 points and Aminah Aziz added 14. Kendra Holmes
Alissa Kain combine to contain Bell down the stretch. Holmes had her 12th
double-double of the year with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kain scored 11 of her
16 points in the second half. Brittany Batts also was hot in the second half,
scoring 16 of her game-high 18 points. Loudoun County (17-3 overall, 11-1 in
district play) hosts Freedom (11-0, 18-2) next Tuesday in a showdown with first
place on the line.
Potomac Falls 45, Dominion 23
The Skinny: The Panthers weren’t about to let the evening at
Dominion be all about the Titans as the visiting PFall girls held the Titans to
just three field goals. Sara Hibson led PF with 12 points and Raven Short added
11.

Wrestling: Dulles District Meet Predictions

(Februrary 6, 2009) – As the season begins to wind down and the seedings are done for the Dulles District Wrestling Tournament, here are some of Half Nelson’s thoughts and predictions for Saturday.

Tyler Anthony of Loudoun County is the favorite here, despite his 2 seed. The match of the tournament at 103 will be in the semis when Murray of Broad Run and Anthony of Loudoun County wrestle. The winner of that match should win the district.
Dark Horse: Nick Rea Potomac Falls

T.J. Julia is the clear favorite here as he has a perfect record in the district between 112 and 119. He has beat the 1 and 3 seeds at 112 and the 2 and 3 seeds at 119. Match of the day here will be in the semis as well when Julia takes on Marquina of Freedom who lost 10-8 to Julia in the final match of the season.
Dark Horse: Steven Marquina Freedom

Chuong Le comes in as the favorite and the number one seed although there are truly 3 wrestlers that can win this weight. Koenig of Potomac Falls and Holton of Heritage should give Le a run for the title and the final should be a close and exciting one!

This weight class should be exciting all the way through the regional tournament! Jurado is the favorite, but his matches with Abi-Najm and Sheptock were close! Abi-Najm beat Sheptock the first time by one and they will meet in semis.

Ryan Hagen is the clear favorite to win at 152. He is 7-0 in the district and will likely see Murphy from Freedom in the finals. Murphy is 6-0 and hasn’t wrestled Hagen yet, but Hagen has proven himself all year!
