Wed. March 18

Baseball
Washington-Lee 6, Broad Run 5
Millbrook 9, Heritage 8

The Skinny: Pride coach Ryan Price reports: Heritage got of to a rough start to the 2009 season, losing to host Millbrook.  The Pride made too many mistakes in the field and on the bases to overcome some big bats for Millbrook.  Pride pitchers walked 5 on the day, while scattering 8 hits, but 4 errors in the field hurt Heritage.

Brenton Peters went 3-4 at the plate, with a single, double, and triple that hit the top of the fence.  He also added an RBI and 2 runs on the night.

Nick Clayton went 1-2, with a double that hit the top of the fence in right field.

Trey Reed went 2-4 with a pair of singles while driving in 2 and stealing 2 bases.

Shane Carrera was 2-2 with 2 singles

Trey Reed takes the loss on the mound, pitching 3 innings and giving up 7 runs, 4 earned.  Mitchell Bowers gave up 2 runs in 3 innings of relief.

JV Spotlight! The Freedom Eagles JV baseball team won their second game of the season, shutting out Freedom Athletic Director Rusty Lowery’s alma mater, Jefferson HS of West Virginia, 5-0.  Andrew Lamont pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win with Dylan Chapman pitching the 7th to complete the Eagles 2nd straight shutout of the season. LPS Monkey says that the JV boys better be nicer to AD Lowery’s alma mater or they might be walking to their next away game!

Boys’ soccer

Stone Bridge 2, Broad Run 1

The Skinny:  The Bulldogs came back after giving up a goal in the first minute of play.  Junior forward Mike Herndon scored with 16 minutes to play in the first half off a throw-in from senior Tri-Captain defender Chris Kamara.  Senior Tri-Captain midfielder Zach Miller scored his first goal of the season on a header from a ball played in from Kamara who had two assists on the night for the second-half game winner.  Senior Tri-Captain Matt Miscione made several key saves in goal late in the contest to help preserve the win.  The Bulldogs now stand at 3-0 on the season and they play away next Tuesday against Centreville. Broad Run had the early lead off a long throw in by junior Ellington — his throws look like some sort of superpower out of X-Men — and was headed home by sophomore Taylor “T-Bone” Johnson.

Dominion 3, Hylton 1
The Skinny: Scoring:

 1st Half

 CD Hylton

Martin Reyes 9:20 (10th minute)

2nd Half

Dominion High School

Sean Skeffington 7:10 (8th  minute), Assisted by Adrian Toscano

Girls’ soccer
Broad Run 2, Stone Bridge 1

The Skinny: The Spartans won their 26th straight match but it was tied at 1-1 with eight minutes to go when BR senior Valerie Powell took a throw-in from sophomore Ellie Zoepfl and looked to cross but the ball had other ideas, as it swerved into the wind and went into the corner of the net for the game-winner. Click here to view this great goal! We also have a large photo gallery from the game that can be viewed here! Broad Run senior midfielder Holly King seems to be auditioning for a remake of  “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” judging from the hang time she gets in some of these photos. The game was scoreless at the half but junior Rachel Tharp put the Spartans up 1-0 in the 47th minute with a volley that rocked the net off a nice free kick from sophomore Whitney Church. Stone Bridge,  young this year with just two seniors on the roster, hung tough and freshman Melissa Rodriguez — sister of super senior Krysti Rodriguez who will play at Hofstra next year — ran onto a ball and was able to slot it past the BR keeper to tie the match.

George Mason 7, Dominion 2

The Skinny: Mustangs report: The boy’s tennis team playing on only three courts again Wednesday evening began match play at 4:30 pm.  Goetz, Sham, and Vroom took on the Dominion Titan’s first with outstanding offensive plays by both Goetz (8-3) and Vroom (8-1).  Goetz took on a solid service game in Hall, but was able to change strokes within each point to overcome being broken once in the match.  Burnett (8-5), An (8-5), and Clark (8-1) each won over their opponents to seal the match win overall.  Chris An has definitely improved on his overall game since last season.  He really has improved on his abilities to win long rallies with his improved back court play.

The teams decided to continue match play into the doubles under the lights for the first time this season.  The sun went down and the Red and White stripes began to shine all over the net with many points being ended quickly from both Goetz and Burnett respectfully.  Goetz/Sham continued their dominance with both serve and volley’s winning (8-2).  Vroom/An had a difficult opponent that was relentless in Chou’s service game and forehand placement losing 7-9 in a tight game.  Burnett/Rodock again prove that their new partnership this year is the real deal winning their third straight (8-4).  All exhibition matches this evening were undefeated as well with new freshman Karl Tagami/Karl Campenella-Dysart winning at 8-2 and Sam Waters/Sam Atkeson winning 8-0.

Girls’ tennis
Thomas Jefferson 9, Stone Bridge 0
Loudoun Valley 9, Stonewall Jackson 0

The Skinny: Loudoun Valley Girls Tennis defeated Stonewall Jackson tonight in a sweep of Singles Courts, 6-0, and Doubles Courts, 3-0, and their next match is on Sat against Washington High School at noon.

George Mason 5, Dominion 4

Thurs. March 19

Baseball
Briar Woods 10, George Mason 2

The Skinny: Falcon coach Josh Mosser reports:

Austin Frattali threw a complete game, and added 2 hits and 4 RBI at the plate.  The Falcons got a strong defensive effort, as Frattali only struck out 4 Mustangs.
Chris Wade added two more hits and continued to show off the leather at short.
But the story was Frattali.  He was around the zone all night long, and was confident in his stuff, especially as the game wore on.  The Falcons had a 4-2 lead heading into the 6th and as the sun was going down (no lights at the field at Mason).  BW put up a 6-spot in the 6th to break things open, and Frattali finished off the Mustangs in the 6th to earn his first victory of the season.

Briar Woods (1-1) travels to Broad Run tonight to open up their Dulles District schedule.  Ian Hickman will take the mound for the Falcons.

11-0 to win its first game of the year. The Panthers scored in every inning
but the first with an 11-hit attack (8 extra base hits - 4 doubles, 3
triples and a homerun). Sophomore pitcher Heather Kiefer evened her record
to 1-1 throwing a one-hit, complete game shutout while striking out 11 and
walking 2. Only three Skyline players reached base, none past the second
inning. The Panthers got things started in the top of the second with
sophomore Kayla Guttridge reaching base on a fielders choice and advancing
to second on a single by freshman Caitlyn McClay. Both runners scored on a
triple by junior Ashley Lamb. In the third inning, junior Bonnie Pascal
doubled and scored on Kiefer's RBI-single. The Panthers scored 3 more runs
in the fourth with a single by McClay scoring on an RBI-double by Lamb;
courtesy runner junior Paige Waltz scoring on a double by Erin Frasca who
was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple; and a walk by freshman
Carlyn Hanzel who scored on Pascal's second double of the game. In the
fifth inning, Guttridge walked and scored on junior Courtney Sunderland's
two-run homer in her only plate appearance while recovering from a foot
injury. In the sixth inning, Pascal hit a triple and scored on a wild
pitch. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning with
walks by Waltz and freshman Julie Griffin both scoring on a triple by
Frasca. Pascal, Lamb and Frasca each had multi- extra base hits for the
evening. Pitcher Amanda Litwith took the loss for Skyline.

“LV lost a heart breaker today to Madison HS. We were up by no more than two goals the entire game and lost the lead late in the 4th quarter. Alex Sharrer made 12 saves in his Varsity debut. I was also very incouraged by our defensive effort today. We will come around on the offensive side we just need time. Being our first game I thought we played well some mental errors and turnovers late in the fourth cost us the win. I thought it was a very good beginning to our 2009 season. The boy’s played hard and never quit. We will learn and improve form this early season game.”
