Heritage’s Thiel Signs to Kick for Saint Frances

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Leesburg (Apr. 22, 2009) – Heritage High School’s new varsity head football coach Steve Williams first met Josh Thiel four years ago as the Pride’s boys soccer coach. Williams wasn’t in the habit of putting freshmen on the varsity but Thiel was a special player scoring nearly a half dozen goals before a knee injury ended his season.
Williams was also an assistant football coach at that time so it wasn’t surprising to see Thiel show off his kicking skills in the fall for the Pride starting his junior year and on Wednesday morning it was his football skills that were being celebrated as he became the school’s first ever NCAA Division I-AA football signee according to Williams.
Thiel will kick at Saint Frances in Loretto, Penn. The Catholic liberal arts college has 2,210 students and the Red Flash play in the Northeast Conference, where they struggled last season, going winless.
Thiel didn’t make his decision lightly, having visited a staggering 16 schools before making his choice. He said that he will punt, kick field goals and kickoff for Saint Frances.
First Thiel will finish his final high school soccer season with the defending Dulles District champion Pride. Williams, getting ready for his first football season at the helm and ushering in the Pride’s move to AAA and the Cedar Run District, will watch Thiel from the sidelines as he no longer coaches soccer.
“Josh was also receiving serious interest from Lock Haven University, but felt that St. Francis was a better fit for him,” said Williams, who called Wednesday’s signing a “hisstoric event” for the school and football program.

D.C. Beltway Area: Girls’ Soccer Top 10

Girls’ Soccer Top 10.
*Rankings and records as of April 20

1. Robinson (6-0-1) — LW: 1
In the year after they won the Virginia AAA State title, the Rams only fortified their strength of schedule. Robinson has faced No. 4 W.T. Woodson, No. 5 Chantilly, perennial Northern Region power Lake Braddock, perennial Central Region power Deep Run and will play No. 7 Oakton on April 28. After beating the Chargers, 2-0, in impressive fashion on Friday (article and highlights HERE), the Rams face West Potomac, Westfield and Yorktown this week.
2. Broad Run (7-0-1) — LW: 4
The Spartans have outscored their opponents 22-2 this year, including 8-0 in the last week. Broad Run beat Dulles District foes Potomac Falls and Dominion 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
3. Loudoun Valley (7-0-0) — LW: 5
The Vikings have torched their first seven opponents, winning by a combined 31-1 margin and sit comfortably atop the Cedar Run District.
4. W.T. Woodson (6-1-1) — LW: 2
Weather willing, Woodson plays No. 6 McLean on April 21. Last week, after opening with a 2-0 road loss to No. 9 Stone Bridge, the Cavaliers rebounded with a 5-3 win over Langley.
5. Chantilly (6-1-1) — LW: 3
The
Chargers beat Fairfax, 3-0, early last week before falling to No. 1 Robinson, 2-0, on the road on Friday. Even with that defeat, Chantilly has outscored its opponents 25-4 this year. It faces No. 7 Oakton at home on Friday.
6. McLean (7-0-0) — LW: 6
The
Highlanders have netted a Northern Region-best 37 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces No. 4 Woodson and Langley this week, weather willing.
7. Oakton (6-0-0) — LW: 7
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 31-2. In a four-day span beginning on April 24, Oakton plays No. 5 Chantilly, Centreville and No. 1 Robinson.
8. West Springfield (6-1-1) — LW: 9
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won six consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw to No. 9 Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 21-0.
9. Stone Bridge (4-2-2) — LW: N/A
The Bulldogs have won three games in a row by a combined 13-0, including a 2-0 home win over then-No. 2 W.T. Woodson on Tuesday. Stone Bridge’s two losses are to No. 2 Broad Run, 2-1, and No. 6 McLean, 2-1. It faces South Lakes and Madison this week, but closes the season with back-to-back matches against No. 5 Chantilly and No. 1 Robinson.
10. South County (3-1-2) — LW: N/A
Since a disappointing 4-1 loss to Centreville, the Stallions are 3-0-2, with their three wins coming by a combined 21-0 margin. South County also tied No. 5 Chantilly, 1-1, on March 24. It faces No. 8 West Springfield at home on Wednesday night.

Also Receiving Votes — listed alphabetically
Battlefield (5-2-1)
Centreville (3-2-1)
Edison (5-1-0)
Heritage (6-2-1)
Herndon (6-2-0)
Woodbridge (4-3-1) — LW: 8

Loudoun Baseball Notebook

LoudounPrepSport.com Baseball Notebook: April 17

By Dan “Safety Squeeze” Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor

(Apr. 17, 2009) – Broad Run High School baseball coach Pat Cassidy shook his head the other night and voiced what everybody had just witnessed: “Potomac Falls is a very good high school baseball team.”

The Panthers, with a two game lead on the pack in the AA Dulles District, have gone 5-0 in district and 7-2 overall with both losses coming at the prestigious Hanahan Invitational Tournament in South Carolina over the break. On Tuesday, PF flexed its muscles in Ashburn, bashing three home runs in a five inning, 12-1 victory.

Potomac Falls has the best of both worlds right now, a lights out pitcher in senior Jake Kline, and a line-up making contact from top to bottom, from sophomore to senior. In fact, Panther coach Joe Terrango said it has been some time since he had a team hitting as well, from No. 1 thru No. 9 in the order, as the Panthers currently are. PF is averaging eight runs a game this season with 73 total in nine contests.

Tonight the Panthers face one of the hottest teams in the Dulles District as Briar Woods, on a five game winning streak, travels to Algonkian Parkway.

Stone Bridge was also at the South Carolina tournament and the Bulldogs came back swinging the bats as well, beating up on Langley Thursday, 11-2, to knock the Saxons back into third place with SB. Tonight the Bulldogs can knock another team back a peg as they face traditional power Madison. SB is 4-2, 9-3 while the Warhawks are 4-1,7-2. McLean is also 4-1 and 7-3 with Langley 4-2, 8-3.

There is plently of basebal in the next 24 hours as teams make-up rainouts on Saturday. Read below for recaps from this week.

Weekend Schedule
Fri

Langley got one back in the top of the fourth on three consecutive two out base hits by seniors Jeremy Mahn, Chris Sievers and Clay Rainee. Stone Bridge came back in the bottom of the fourth and scored three to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Michael Prince led off with a double off the left field fence went ot third on a wild pitch and scored on a errant pick off throw by the catcher, After junior Michael Mattingly got a one out walk,
Senior Pat Piccolo hit a two out home run over the left center field fence.

Langley got one back in the top of the fifth on a single by junior Ian Wood and and a double off the right field fence by senior Jack McLindon

Battlefield 5, Loudoun Valley 4
The Skinny: Vikes rally in seventh inning falls just short as they strand tying run on thrid base.

A Viking fan reports that:

After two weeks which included spring break and several rain outs, the Loudoun Valley Vikings baseball finally hit the diamond. They traveled to Battlefield High School and lost a close one 5-4.  Shortstop Bobby Seagers went 2 for 2 with a walk and scored three runs to lead the Bobcat offense. Josh Williams pitched six innings and faced two batters in the top of the 7th inning to record the win. John Shepherd came in relief and got the save.
In the top of the 7th inning with the Bobcats leading 5-1, the Vikings tried to mount a comeback.  They scored three runs but fell short leaving runners on 1st and 3rd base. Junior Peter Evans led the Vikings going 3 for 4. The Vikings fall to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Cedar Run District. They play Fauquier High School on Friday, April 17th and Yorktown on Saturday,  April 18th. Both games are at Fireman’s Field.

Briar Woods 7, Park View 2
The Skinny: Falcons win fifth straight game after opening year 1-2.

BW coach Josh Mosser reports:
BW wins its 5th straight game with a 7-2 decision over Park View at BW Tuesday night.  Junior Austin Frattali picked up his third win to run his record to 3-0, throwing 5 innings, scattering 4 hits, and striking out 4.  Senior Ian Hickman finished the game with two scoreless innings to pick up his 3rd save.

Senior Chris Wade continued to swing a hot bat for BW, going 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI, upping his average to .400 and his RBI total to 13.  Hickman went 2-3 and drove in a run, and continues to lead the Falcons in hitting with a .469 average.  Junior Kyle Haufler went 2-3 on the night, upping his average to .441.

The Falcons will host Loudoun County tomorrow, and will travel to Potomac Falls on Friday.

Potomac Falls 12, Broad Run 1 (5 innings)
The Skinny: One of the few games played on Tuesday but the weather couldn’t stop the Panthers hitting machine

Potomac Falls continued to carry their big sticks in their trip to Broad Run last night as Rob Malan, Mike Spring and Ryan Miller all hit homeruns in the Panthers 12-1 win. The win keeps Potomac Falls unbeaten in the District and improved Jacob Kline’s record to 3-0 in the District.

The Panthers got things rolling in the 1st when Ryan Mahoney pulled a pitch down the right field line for a single and Rob Malan followed with a shot over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, Broad Run’s Shane Vlasic hit a shot to left field for a leadoff single. After a strikeout, Johnston hit a groundball to second where Ben Sweger turned a double play to end the inning.

Potomac Falls exploded in the second with 5 runs on 7 hits. Chris Pelto, Sweger, Mahoney, Malan, Spring and Miller all had consecutive hits off of Brandon Craft. Meanwhile, Kline was limiting the Spartans to 2 hits through 4 innings with 6 strikeouts.

In the 4th inning, Mike Spring hit a drive over the center field fence and his blast was followed by Ryan Miller’s shot to right field.  Miller now has 3 homeruns in his last two games.  The Panthers closed out their scoring in the 5th inning with singles by Harrison Kee, Sweger and a double by Mahoney to make it 12-0.

Broad Run scored their only run in the 5th when Chris Jessop ripped a triple to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Zach Rawson.

Rob Malan (2-4,  HR, 3 RBI’s), Mike Spring (3-3, HR, 3 RBI’s) Ryan Miller (2-3, HR), Ryan Mahoney (3-4, 2 RBI’s), Ben Sweger (2-4, RBI) and Jacob Kline (5 innings, 5 hits, 6 K’s, 1 BB)

Heritage 3, Dominion 2
The Skinny: Andy Zarobila wins match-up on the mound with Dominion’s Chris Taylor.

Pride coach Ryan Price reports:
It was a big time pitching matchup between Chris Taylor of Dominion and Andy Zarobila of Heritage, and neither pitcher disappointed.  Zarobila picks up the win with a complete game.
Zarobila scattered 6 hits over 7 innings giving up 2 runs, only one earned. Taylor pitched 5 innings, giving up 3, only 1 earned.

Loudoun County 8, Freedom 6 (8 innings)
The Skinny: Eagles led 6-2 going into the sixth inning before Raiders rallied

Freedom coach Chris Bourassa reports:
Despite playing error free baseball, the Eagles could not hold a 6-2 lead entering the 6th inning.  Loudoun County scored two runs in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings to win a come from behind game over the Freedom Eagles. The Raiders Nick Fischer and NIck Veshi hit clutch two out doubles to tie the game in the 7th inning. The Eagles loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but Raiders SS JJ Levan made a nice play to get a force at 2nd base to end the inning.
Kyle Severns led the Eagles offense going 2-4 with a walk. Ali Moosvi added a 2-run double and 2 walks for the Eagles.
