(Apr. 17, 2009) – Briar Woods High School, on a school record six-game winning streak, not only has a chance to extend that streak to eight games in the next 24 hours, but the Falcons have a clear chance to establish themselves as the team closest on the heels of AA Dulles District frontrunner, two-time defending state champion Broad Run.

Briar Woods (4-1 in district, 6-2 overall) travels to Potomac Falls (4-1, 7-1) tonight at 6 p.m. in a marquee match-up and then the Falcons host Loudoun County (3-2, 5-2) on Saturday at noon.

How tight is this district? Consider that Broad Run (4-0, 6-1) sits on top of the standings but that two of those four district victories include a 1-0 win over Potomac Falls earlier this week and a 3-2 extra inning win at Loudoun County. The Panthers loss in Ashburn on Tuesday is their only blemish on the season that includes a 3-0 win over Loudoun County.

Briar Woods fell to Broad Run, 3-0, in the second game of the season but the Falcons have since won a school-record six straight games including their first ever win over Park View this week. Briar Woods has out-scored opponents by a 57-3 margin on the year.

In AAA: Loudoun Valley (4-1, 5-2) has to figure into any argument over the area’s top softball team, especially after the Vikes pushed No. 1 Battlefield (6-0, 9-0) into extra innings Thursday before falling 1-0. It was the Vikes for loss since opening with a loss to Stone Bridge, a team that ended Broad Run’s two-year plus winning streak before Spring Break. The Vikes are second in the Cedar Run with Osbourn Park and Stonewall Jackson each with two losses in district. 

Stone Bridge (4-1, 8-2) is one game in the loss column behind Liberty District leader Madison (6-0, 9-0). The Bulldogs can make a big statement when they travel to Vienna tonight to take on the district leading Warhawks. McLean (4-1, 8-3) and Langley (3-1, 5-3) are also in the mix.

The Skinny: Falcons gain first ever win over Patriots.

Junior Kate Fowler tossed a three-hit shutout and fellow junior Holly Dominguez went 2-for-2 with two singles, two walks and two runs scored as Briar Woods picked up its first-ever win over Park View 7-0 on a cold and rainy Tuesday night in Ashburn.
The Falcons improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Dulles District with their school-record sixth straight win, and they also matched the school single-season mark of seven shutout victories they set just last year. In eight games so far this season, Briar Woods has outscored its opponents by a combined 57-3 and has allowed just one earned run.
After trading two scoreless innings with the Patriots, Briar Woods took control of the game with four runs in the third. The Falcons loaded the bases behind a lead-off single by sophomore Alex Fierszt, a walk by
Dominguez and a single by sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis. Freshman Macy Jones then coaxed a walk to plate Fierszt with the game’s first run, and Dominguez beat out a throw home on a fielder’s choice off the bat of junior Caitlin Blalock. Sophomore Kasey Ball then added a key two-run single to cap the inning.
The Falcons increased their advantage to 5-0 with another run in the bottom of the fourth when Dominguez laced a lead-off single and later scored on a Blalock single.
Junior Claire Bayles added a pinch-hit, two-run single in the sixth to close out the scoring.
The run support was more than enough for Fowler, who turned in yet another strong performance in the circle. She battled the poor weather conditions and worked out of several jams to improve to 5-1 on the
season.
After retiring the side in the first, Fowler allowed a lead-off walk and hit the next batter in the second before using a sacrifice bunt, a ground out and a foul out to end the Patriot threat.
Park View got its first hit of the game on a double by Samantha Thomas with two outs in the third, but she was erased on a fielder’s choice to end the frame.
Fowler issued two-out walks in the fourth and sixth innings but used strike outs to close both frames. In the fifth, Fowler gave up a two-out single by Samantha Gleason but helped her own cause by snared a
screaming liner off the bat of Thomas to end that inning.
Park View looked to avoid the shutout in the top of the seventh when it had runners on second and third with two out, but Fowler notched her
ninth strikeout of the game to seal the victory.
With her 2-for-2 effort at the plate, Dominguez has now hit safely in each of her last eight official at-bats over the past three games (walks do not count as at-bats). Blalock finished 2-for-4 with two singles and
two RBIs, while Ball also drove in two runs and drew a walk.
Park View coach Ed Abener filed this report after the game as well:
Park View lost their third straight game tonight—this one by a score of 7-0 to Briar Woods.  The Falcons picked up seven runs on seven hits while the Patriots once again struggled at the plate picking up only three hits.  Junior Sam Gleason was again the best Patriot hitter as she collected two hits.  Freshman Sam Thomas collected the third hit, a double to right field.  Tonight, the Patriots committed three errors that led to two unearned runs.  Robin Heironimus started the game and lasted two plus innings before being replaced by Freshman Brittney Moore. Park View hosts Freedom High School this coming Friday evening and will be looking to stop their current skid. 



Broad Run 1, Potomac Falls 0
The SKinny: Judy Betz pitches a 1-hitter for Sprartans and Panthers fall for first time this year.

Broad Run senior Judy Betz and Potomac Falls sophomore Heather Kiefer locked up in a nice pitcher’s duel and while there were some baserunners earlier in the game, neither pitcher allowed a run until the Spartans pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning.

That was enough for Betz who finished with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit on a bunt.

Junior Anna Blessing started the winning rally with a hit down the right field line to open the home half of the sixth. Broad Run had its troubles earlier trying to move runners over but junior Jen Soroka got down her bunt nicely, forcing Panther freshman third baseman Lauren Fulcher to field the ball. While Fulcher was throwing Soroka out at first base, Blessing hustled around second toward third base which was uncovered. Panther junior catch Courtney Sunderland sprinted up the baseline to cover the bag but Blessing was able to beat the tag.

Broad Run freshman Kate Sims then singled sharply up the middle to score Blessing and that was all Betz would need.

Kiefer rolled the first time through the Spartan line-up, not allowing anything out of the infield but in the third inning, senior Megan Waterman and sophomore Maggie Betz had back-to-back hits with one out. Kiefer got out of the threat with a strikeout and a line drive to Panther freshman second baseman Caitlin McClay. In the fifth inning, Betz tripled to right-center with two outs but Kiefer got a ground out to Fulcher to keep the game scoreless.

Betz, who said after the game that working nine innings against Loudoun County before the break gave her confidence after being limited to five innings per outing while recovering from offseason surgery, started and finished strong, striking out the side in the first and seventh. She had five more strikeouts in between for 11 total. The only hit allowed came in the fifth inning as sophomore Kayla Guttridge reached on a bunt single. Guttridge moved around to third base but the Panthers could not get her home as Betz ended the inning on a grounder out to sophomore second baseman Jenny Kramer.

Despite the Sun, Wet Fields Force Changes in Loudoun

(Apr. 15, 2009) – So far it has been a spring that only a true David Bowie fan could love (Ch-ch-changes anybody). Despite the appearance the sun — for the first time since last Oct. (no kidding) — wet fields are forcing some postponements and other changes tonight.
As always, check with your team’s coach, your school’s athletic site and perhaps a tea leaf reader before heading to the big game.

LoudounPrepSports.com Invitational Set for Saturday at Heritage

Leesburg (Apr. 16, 2009) – The 4th Annual LoudounPrepSports.com Invitational track and field meet this Saturday at Heritage High School features some top competition and includes all 10 high school from Loudoun plus nine other schools including Stonewall Jackson and Marshall.
Gates will open at 9 a.m. with $5 admission charge. Wristbands will be used so fans may reenter during the day. The field events start at 9:30 and the 3200 relay will be at 10 a.m. Running events are scheduled to get underway at 11:45. There are no prelims with the meet ran in sections according to times. The awards ceremony is scheduled for aproximately 4 p.m.
The Stone Bridge girls and Jefferson WV boys won the meet in 2008. Heritage girls and Broad Run boys won in 2007. The 2006 meet was rained out.
The highlight of the meet may be a match-up in the 200 meters between Stonewall Jackson’s Damien Thigpen (21.73) and Stone Bridge’s Daniel Allen (21.80). In the 100 meters, Allen has the top time this year in Virginia with a 10.69. He will square off against Corey Grant of Washington WV who has run a 11.03.
In the field events, David Wang of Stone Bridge (shot put) and Kevin Parks of Stonewal Jackson (triple jump) have Top 10 marks.
The Potomac Falls distance teams are always strong and Christina Lee is a top five performer in the state in the 800 and 1600 meters. In the 800 she will be challenged by Stone Bridge’s Stephanie Paradis and Sophia Holmes of Clarke County. The Panther girls 4×800 relay team should be pushed by Stone Bridge and Millbrook. All three teams come in with Top 10 times this year in the state. On the boys side, Ryan Hagen (1:56) in the 800 meters and Josh Hardin (9:33) 3200 meters are both state title threats in their events this year. The PF boys 4×800 realy team is No. 2 in the state and they should be pushed by both Marshall and Broad Run.
The Stone Bridge boys 4×100 relay team has run a 42.76 and faces off against Park View and Stonewall Jackson teams with good times. 
In the 110 hurdles, Andre Best of Stone Bridge is No. 4 in the state and T.J. McPhaul of host Heritage comes in with Top 10 time in the 300 hurdles.
The meet ends with the 4×400 relay and the event could see as many as five teams on the boys side break 3:30 or better with Thigpen running for Stonewall Jackson. Broad Run, featuring Rashawn Hugg and Eric Hiatt, comes in with a top time of 3:27.
Forecasts are calling for sunny and 70+ degrees on Saturday!

1. Robinson (5-0-1)
The
Rams were 21-1-0 last season en route to capturing the Virginia AAA
state title and returned nine starters from that team. Robinson has
outscored its opponents 17-4 this season and only has a 2-2 road draw
with No. 2 W.T. Woodson keeping it from perfection. It faces No. 3
Chantilly on Friday.
2. W.T. Woodson (5-0-1)
The Cavaliers only graduated four players from last year’s team that went 12-3-2, but are without Florida State-bound senior Niki Mercier,
who will miss the season with a knee injury. Woodson tied No. 1
Robinson, 2-2, on April 1 — no fooling — and has a marquee match with
No. 6 McLean on April 21.
3. Chantilly (5-0-1)
The
Chargers have outscored their opponents 20-2 this season, but 16 of
those goals came in the first three games. Chantilly faces No. 1
Robinson on the road on Friday.
4. Broad Run (5-0-1)
The Spartans went 24-0-0 last season en route to the Virginia AA State title and have five college signees: Holly King (Florida), Valerie Powell (Arkansas), Kelly Evans (Old Dominion), Caitlin Hunter (UNC-Wilmington) and Taylor Starr (Tusculum). Broad Run has outscored its opponents 14-2 this year.
5. Loudoun Valley (6-0-0)
The Vikings have torched their first six opponents, winning by a combined 23-1 margin.

The
Highlanders have posted a Northern Region-best 30 goals this season,
while allowing just six, but a 15-0 season-opening win at Wakefield
skews that statistic. McLean faces South Lakes and Jefferson this week
before squaring off with No. 2 Woodson on April 21.
7. Oakton (5-0-0)
No
team has gotten within three goals of the Cougars this season as they
have outscored their opponents by a collective 28-2. Oakton closes its
season with four consecutive games teams either in the Top 10 or those
that also received votes.
8. Woodbridge (3-2-1)
The
Vikings knocked off defending state runner-up Battlefield, 4-0, earlier
this season, but fell to defending state champion No. 1 Robinson, 4-1,
on March 16. Woodbridge plays Potomac (Va.) and Forest Park this week.
9. West Springfield (5-1-1)
The
Spartans, who returned seven starters, have won five consecutive games
after opening the season with a 1-1 draw with Stone Bridge and a 1-0
loss to Centreville. During its winning streak, West Springfield has
outscored its opponents 13-0.
10. Washington-Lee (6-1-0)
The
Generals have marched out to a surprising start with amazing defense,
allowing only six goals through seven goals. But three of those allowed
came in a 3-0 loss to No. 9 West Springfield on March 25.

Boys’ Soccer: Blackburn Rovers FC 2, GFA Elite 0

With its tournament life at stake, Great Falls Elite rattled off repeated scoring chances against Blackburn Rovers FC.

Unfortunately for the team from Fairfax County, Va., however, the last line of English defense was true to form.

Blackburn goalkeeper Matthew Urwin had five saves — and was assisted by a pair of open-goal blocked shots by his back line — en route to a clean sheet and a 2-0 win for the Premiere League side at Georgetown University on Thursday, which locked up a berth in the Tiffany Cup championship.

“It’s always good,” Urwin said of his shutout. “If you keep the clean sheet, you don’t lose, do you? It’s always good to keep the clean sheet.”

While shutouts make losses impossible, wins require goals.

And in the sixth minute, Blackburn striker Jason Blanton — a U-17 England National Team call-up — earned one for the visitors on a free kick.

The one-goal lead held for the remainder of the first half, despite several threats to goal from GFA Elite.

The most menacing chance was an artful volley by midfielder Dylan Bowman — a U-17 Men’s National Team pool player — that Urwin frayed with a leaping left-handed punch in the 13th minute.

But it was not until the 61st minute that the club from Northwest England lengthened its margin.

Bowman made a long run down the left channel before firing a low shot that was kicked to the top of the box by GFA keeper Mark Bixler. Rovers midfielder Filip Pivkovski settled the rebound, dribbled to the end line and played a ball to midfielder James Knowles at the top of the six.

Knowles stretched the net with a smooth, right-footed strike, all but clinching a win and a championship game berth with Real Madrid CF at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va., on Saturday at 11 a.m.

“It takes pressure of you,” said Urwin of Knowles’ insurance goal. “You still have to work hard, but it keeps pressure of you.

“That’s a bit better, isn’t it?”

Added Knowles, a Northern Ireland youth national team member: “It gives us more time to relax and we can bring players off, which gives us more time to relax for the final.”

Heritage Sweeps Doubleheader from George Mason

(Wed. Apr. 8, 2009) – The Heritage High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from Geroge Mason on Tuesday to reach the .500 mark on the season at 4-4.
The Pride started the year with three straight losses but since then have won four of five including three straight now. Heritage swept GM 8-1 and 9-5.
In the first game of the non-district action, senior Trey Reed had his pitches working according to Heritage coach Ryan Price, keeping the Mustang hitters off balance on way to a complete game win. He allowed just four hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
In the second game, sophomore Mitchell Bowers was supported by a 5-run Pride first and worked five innings, giving up five runs on four hits and four walks with four strikeouts. 
When Bowers got in trouble in the fifth inning by giving up a single, walk and back-to-back hits, sophomore Shane Carrera relieved and faced the minimum to end the game.
Carrerra had three strikeouts in his perfect two innings.

In the big first inning in the second game the Pride took advantage of a leadoff walk to Brenton Peters, pushing five accross with Reed, Andy Zarobila, Mitcehll Bowers, Peter Harbolick and Patrick Gotimer all reaching on hits.

GFA Elite beats local foe before taking on World

Before Great Falls Academy Elite has to play some of the top teams amateur club teams from around the world, it got to face a familiar foe in the Freestate Soccer Academy from Bowie, Md.

The two teams have played four or five times in the past couple months. And according to forward K.C. Onyeador, GFA Elite has come out on top each time.

That pattern continued Monday as GFA Elite defeated its metro area foe, 2-0, at Trinity College in GFA’s first game in the International Amateur Soccer Tournament

Onyeador, who plays for Park View High School, scored his team’s second goal while National Pool player Dylan Bowman of James River broke what was a scoreless game with a  header goal three minutes into the second half.

“We hold the upper hand,” Bowman said of the rivalry with Freestate. “We knew we had some chances and knew we were going to get some second half goals. We just had to put them away.”

Bowman’s goal came off a cross from Robinson forward Koko Makumbi. The chipped cross found Bowman in traffic near the penalty stripe. His header wasn’t all that powerful but it was just inside the right post to give GFA a 1-0 lead.

“Dylan’s goal, that was a great goal,” Onyeador said. “The ball was over me and Dylan comes out of nowhere and puts it in the bottom corner.”

“Probably my first headed goal,” Bowman added.

Onyeador’s goal, off a nifty little pass from Bowman, was scored just 14 minutes later in the 62nd minute.

But now it’s on to literally more foreign competition for GFA Elite. The club will face Chivas de Corazon from Guadalajara, Mexico on Wednesday and Blackburn Rovers from Blackburn, England on Thursday.

“It’s good to get off to a good start because our next challenges are going to be pretty big,” Onyeador said.

GFA Elite Coach Ed Beach watched the two teams battle to a tie on Sunday.

“I was very, very, very impressed,” Beach said. “It seems they brought over their better players and we’ll have our hands more than full.”

Spring Sports Round-up: April 1-4

The Skinny: Falcon coach Josh Mosser reports that BW won its third straight game tonight, scoring a 9-2 victory over the Judges of John Handley High School.  Austin Frattali pitched 4.2 innings to pick up his second win of the year.  Garrett Thomas pitched the final 2.1 innings to earn his first save.

Briar Woods 1, Handley 0
The Skinny: Falcon assistant Chris Starke reports that Junior Kate Fowler scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Briar Woods a hard-fought 1-0 win over visiting Handley in non-district softball action Wednesday night in Ashburn. The Falcons tied a school record with their fifth straight win – a mark set last season – and improved to 6-1 overall.

 
Fowler led off the home half of the final inning with a two-strike single to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Jillian Olson placed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Fowler to third, and, after a strikeout, Fowler raced home with the lone run of the game as a low pitch hit the dirt in front of the plate and squirted through the catcher’s legs.
 
Just one night after pounding out 13 hits in a 16-0 win over Heritage, the Falcons struggled to find any offensive rhythm, managing just four hits against Handley junior Chelsea Hamric.
 
However, Briar Woods freshman Macy Jones and sophomore Kristina Karagiorgis were even better in the circle, combining for a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Jones worked the first five innings and fanned six Handley batters, while Karagiorgis earned the win after pitching the final two frames and posting four strikeouts.
 
The Falcons appeared to pick up right where they left off last night against Heritage, as junior Holly Dominguez ripped a triple to left center to start the bottom of the first. However, she was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to third, and Hamric used a strikeout and ground out ended the inning.
 
Handley had its only base runners in the top of the second. Caitlin Johnson drew a lead-off walk but was erased on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Hamric. Hamric later advanced to second on a passed ball, but Jones struck out Lauren Yaider for the second out and Fowler made a fine running back-handed catch of a low foul ball outside the first base bag to end the inning.
 
Fowler’s play was one of three excellent defensive stops made by the Falcons in the game. With one out in the fourth, sophomore Alex Fierszt tracked down a deep fly ball that would have otherwise resulted in extra bases. Fellow sophomore Kasey Ball robbed Amarisa Alvarez of a would-be leadoff single in the seventh, making a great backhanded stop of a sharply hit ball up the middle and then firing to first for the out.
 
Briar Woods had a few chances in the game but came up empty until the seventh. Fowler drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second but was erased on a fielder’s choice, and Dominguez endured the same fate in the third. Ball hit a one-out single in the fourth and Dominguez added a two-out single in the fifth, but both were again wiped out on fielder’s choices.

The Skinny: Raider coach Ryan Vance reports that LC bounces back nicely from the tough extra inning loss to Broad Run on Tuesday with another outstanding team effort in all phases of the game. LCHS defense committed only its fourth error of the year on a tough line drive in the 3rd inning. Back to back night of the defensive stepping up to get LCHS out of some tough jams. Holtz pitched 7 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on 9 hits, 5 BB, 8 K’s. Offense: 14 hits, 5 SB, 6 BB

The Skinny: Bulldogs win third game in three days as Cori Prince drives in two runs with a single with one out in the top of the seventh innning. Cassie Phillips pitched a complete game, striking out six, and allowing four hits. Pats coach Ed Abner reports that PV was leading 1-0 going into the seventh, the Patriots gave up five hits to the Bulldogs, who plated all three of their runs with one out.  Freshman Brittney Moore absorbed the loss for the Patriots to even her record (and Park View’s) at 3-3.  All three Bulldog runs were earned.  The offensive highlight of the evening for the Patriots was Junior Samantha Gleason’s two hits, one of which was a solo home run in the third.  That hit and subsequent run stood all the way into the seventh but the Patriots were unable to hold on.  The Patriots accumulated only four hits, going just 1/14 over the last four and a third innings.  Defensively, the Patriots were strong.  Senior Kristin Oravetz was outstanding at second base and Brittney Moore had 7 assists from the mound.

The Skinny: Bulldog assistant coach Sherrie Colby reports that Stone Bridge Bulldogs earned their first district win Wednesday night at home against the Marshall Statesmen. Five minutes into the game, senior Krysti Rodriguez scored the first goal of the night with an assist from her freshman sister Melissa Rodriguez. M. Rodriguez scored 4 minutes later off a pass from junior Jennifer Skogerboe. Three minutes later it was Skogerboe who scored off a cross from freshman Ashley Ferguson. In the second half, K. Rodriguez headed the ball into the back of the net from a Skogerboe corner kick. Soon after, K. Rodriguez scored her third goal of the night taking a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. After getting past a couple of Marshall defenders, Ferguson scored her own goal of the night. Scoring the final goal of the night was Sophomore Emily Fredrikson off a cross from freshman Erin Leonard. Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Harmison recorded 2 saves for the night. Stone Bridge will resume play Tuesday, April 14 at home against Woodson.

The Skinny: What a comeback as the Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to ****** a victory away from the Centreville Wildcats, winning 7-6. With the Wildcats ahead 6-4, senior Iain Mottice led the inning off with a walk.  Wildcat southpaw Connor Bach would fan the next two Viking hitters.  With two outs, freshman Matt Reed laced a single to centerfield to put runners at first and second base.  Junior Peter Evans came to the plate and delivered a two run double to the gap in left centerfield plating both Mottice and Reed.  With the score tied and the winning run at second base, junior Beattie Southerland was intentionally walked.  Senior Tyler Huffman came in to pinch hit and he was walked on four straight pitches.  With two outs and the bases jammed, junior Alexander Barr hit a single into centerfield for the game winning RBI.
 
Senior TJ Daeschner started the game for the Vikings throwing six complete innings. He gave up five runs (4 earned) on six hits while striking out seven hitters.  Senior Daniel Burke came in the top of the 7th inning and pitched 2/3 of an inning. Junior Carl Larsen pitched the final out of the 7th inning to get the Vikings out of a jam and the win.
 
Loudoun Valley improves to 3-3 overall with a 2-2 Cedar Run district record. Centreville falls to 0-6, 0-4 in the Concorde District.  The Vikings travel to Culpeper on Friday, April 03, 2009.

The Skinny: Eagle coach Chris Bourassa reports that Heritage comes from behind to win 7-4 with pitcher Andy Zarobila pitching 6 innings for the win.  Freedom had 9 hits, 7 walks and a HPB but was 0-8 in bases loaded situations leaving the bases loaded in three innings and ultimately 13 runners left on base.  Kyle Severns led the Eagles offense with a solo home run, double, walk, HBP, and 2 RBI.  Brendon Shockley added two hits and 2 RBI.  Ali Moosvi pitched 6 innings from Freedom allowing 7 hits, 2 walks, and 5 earned runs. Kyle Groome pitched a 1-2-3 7th, recording 2 strikeouts. 

Pride coach Ryan Price reports that his pitcher Andy Zarobila struggled early, but was able to find the zone and earn the win over the host Eagles.  Zarobila threw 6 innings, giving up 3 runs, all three were earned.  Zarobila allowed 9 hits in the game, but struck out 9 hitters and walked 5 batters, and hit one.

Mitchell Bowers came in in relief in the 7th getting Baker to ground out, then loaded the bases on a walk, a hit, and another walk.  Bowers then struck out Murphy.  This brought up Severns to the plate, who had already hit a home run and a double.  He was intentionally walked which brought a run in making it 7-4.  Bowers was able to get Groome to ground out to second baseman Peter Harbolick to end the game.

The Skinny: Benny Piccolo reports that a strong pitching performance by Sr. Nick Fialdini and closer Sr. Johnny Bladel and a couple hits by Sr. Pat Piccolo 2-3 with a run scored was enough for Stone Bridge to pull out a hard fought 3-2 victory. 

Woodson scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Jr. Matt Patrick reached on an error, Sophmore John McGillicuddy got a one out double to put runners on second and third.  Fialdini then got the next batter to pop out to the shortstop and then threw a wild pitch to allow a run in before striking out Sr, Kirk Lewis to end the inning.  In the third Woodson was threating again as Jr. Colin Dempsey led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on a single by Sr. Max Waizennegger.  Fialdini struck out Jr. Brendan Breslin and after Waizenegger stole second Coach Plank intentionally walked Jr. Connor Finnerty to load the bases.  Fialdini then struck out Matt Patrick.  Connor Reilly then hit a ball up the middle but Pat Piccolo made a nice diving stab and toss to second to end the rally.   

Stone Bridge took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.  Pat Piccolo led off with a double down the right field line.  Sr. Brad Koch sacrificed him to third and then he scored on a base hit by sophomore Spenser Rositano.  On a hit and run Rositano got to second as Michael Prince grounded to the shortstop.  Coach Warren then intentionally walked Johnny Bladel and on a double steal the catcher threw the ball into left field allowing Rositano to score.  Stone Bridge added a run in the fourth.  Jr. Taylor Lambke got a one-out single up the middle, Jr, Dillon Berger got hit by a pitch and Pat Piccolo singled to left to load the bases.  Brad Koch then grounded out to short scoring lambke. 

Woodson made the score 3-2 in the fifth.  Max Waizenegger led off with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Connor Finnerty. 
Johnny Bladel came on in relief in the sixth and shut down Woodson the rest of the way striking out the side in the top of the seventh to get the save.

Summary – Potomac Falls ( 6 -1)  continued their winning ways with another shutout, beating Skyline  6 -0.  The Panther’s were active on offense with both junior Bonnie Pascal and freshman Carlyn Hanzel going 2-3, sophomore Heather Kiefer going 2-4 with a double, junior Courtney Sunderland  going 3 for 3, and freshman Peyton Valentine going 1-2.  After a scoreless first inning, the Panther’s  freshman Caitlin McClay had a lead off walk, was advanced on a SAC bunt by Valentine, and scored when Pascal singled. Then in the fourth inning, McClay had another a lead off walk, Valentine singled but was thrown out at 2nd on Lauren Fulcher’s fielder’s choice.  Pascal came up to bat and hit a single, scoring McClay and Fulcher.  The inning continued when Hanzel was walked and then scored on a single by Sunderland.  In the sixth inning, the Panthers continued to score.   Pascal  was walked, Hanzel singled, and both scored on Kiefer’s double.  Skyline got 3 hits but no runners advanced past 1st base.  One runner strayed too far off 1st base and was gunned down by catcher Sunderland.  Potomac Falls pitcher Heather Kiefer threw her fifth shutout of the season with 9 strikeouts.


Stone Bridge 8, Woodson 1
The Skinny: SB makes it four wins in four days as they defeated W.T. Woodson 8 – 1 — behind the hitting of Michelle Mocabee who hit a pair of doubles accounting for 3 RBI’s and Caroline Kittinger who had a double and a single with 2 RBI’s.  Cassie Phillips hit a single and accounted for 2 RBI’s.  Cassie Phillips pitched a complete game with 8 strike outs.  The Lady Bulldogs play at Langlely on April 10th.

The WashPost covers Heritage’s first game of the week and then Loudoun Times-Mirror does this game. Heck … we will just link to the Times-Mirror story and the LPS Monkey will lick his wounds in the corner. Actually the Little Guy felt much better than LC’s Adam Wilburn reported the following: The Raiders fell to 0-2 in district play 1-3 overall Thursday as they were defeated 15-10 by Heritage. The Raiders started strong as they quickly amassed a 4-1 lead but could not hold on for the victory. Points were scored by the following:

Loudoun Valley 12, Stonewall 1
The Skinny: LVHS opened district play with a strong win against Cedar Run opponent Stonewall Jackson. The game started off sloppy with many turnover, partially due to a 10 day gap between games due to inclement weather. But midway into the second quarter, Valley began getting their legs and took a 5-1 lead into the half. Valley surpassed their halftime lead by scoring 7 after half. This was sparked by junior attackmen, Dylan Zook who scored four goals and had two assists. Defensivley the Vikings palyed well allowing one goal on a night where Stonewall only took 13 shots. Goalie Alex Sharrer recorded 7 saves. The entire team saw time in the contest doing a great job with their opportunities.

Dominion 11, George Mason 8
The Skinny: Big, big win for Titans as they knock off tri-champs from last year and previously unbeaten George Mason Mustangs Thursday night 11 to 8.  The Mustangs were quickly put on alert as the Titans scored two goals in the first two minutes of the game.  At halftime the Titans held a 4 to 2 edge, mainly on the strength of Sophomore Goalie Andrew Fawkes who came up with 11 key saves in the first half alone. Third year head coach Pete Lenotti awarded Fawkes the Game Ball as he held off the Mustangs with 17 saves on the night.  The Titans put the game away in the 3rd with 5 goals, including 3 within a minute, taking a 9 to 3 lead into the 4th. But George Mason was not done and scored 3 straight goals of their own in the middle of the 4th to close the gap to 9 to 7. The Titans came back in the middle of the 4th on the strength of goals by Senior Middies Zack Glascock and Andrew Russell to pull away.  Senior Attackman Michael Fawkes again led all scorers with 4 goals and 3 assists on the night.

Briar Woods 19, Park View 4
The Skinny: Falcon coach Laura Nelson reports that the Briar Woods High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse team increased its overall record to an unprecedented 6-0 with a win over Park View High School 19-4 on Thursday, April 2, 2009.  In the four year history of the school, this is by far the best start this team has ever earned.
 
The win was a great team effort with ten different girls scoring.  Leading the goal-scorers was Senior Meaghan Leon.  Juniors Julianne Lewis and Shannon Wood each added three goals, as did newcomer and Sophomore Mary Sydney Garrett.  Adding one goal a piece were Seniors Amanda Fisher, Aminah Aziz and Katie Cerow, Juniors Priscilla Smith and Taylor Fisher and Sophmore Danielle Powell.  Of the 19 goals, 12 were assisted by varying team members, including Taylor Miller and Emily Jensen. 
 
Keeping Park View to its four goals, the defense played brilliantly.  Defenders Carrie Thysse, Katie Saba and Christine Edeline dominated the defensive end of the field, all guided by goalie Mariko Itchkawich.     
 
Coach Nelson and Coach Breinig could not be any prouder of their team and they look forward to seeing just how far they are going to go this season and beyond.

The Skinny: Raiders report that they improved their record to 5-0 with a 21-8 win over Heritage. After jumping out to a halftime lead of 15-3, the Raiders finished the game with 10 different scorers. Leading the scorers was Katie Martin with 6 for 6 shooting, followed by Brooke Hewartson(4 goals, 1 assist), Rachel Solis (3 goals, 1 assist) and Hannah Young(2 goals). Also scoring goals were Hannah Arnold, Ginny Burke, Kasey Fletcher, Sydney Hewartson, Madi Kelliher, and Emily Seifert.

Lesya Chopivsky led the strong defensive effort, with 2 interceptions and 1 ground ball, with Kaitlin Ireland snagging 3 ground balls and 1 interception. Freshmen Jessie Joseph had 8 saves in goal while classmate Shannon Rose contributed her first ground ball of the season. Caila Cummings and Caroline Joseph each picked up 2 ground balls, with Cummings also controlling 2 draws. Christine Rihn’s hustle on the offensive end resulted in two Raider possessions. Krista Kearney, Jaci Shepherd and Dominque Lategano all made strong showings on both offense and defense.

Heritage Strikes Quick and Holds off Clarke County

Leesburg (Apr. 4, 2009) – The Heritage High School boys soccer team scored in the first 35 seconds of the game Sauturday and then held on for 1-0 on a wind blow afternoon.
After a throw-in Any Salzer (#5, SR) scored on the rebound off of a defender. Goalkeeper Jake Flanagan (JR) earned another shutout on a day of very gusty winds.

Heritage improves to 3-2-1 on the season. The Pride are off unitl April 14 when they resume AA Dulles District play by hosting Dominion.
