The Shot Heard ‘Round Loudoun’

By: Dan Sousa

Leesburg (Jan. 27, 2007) – Heritage High School senior D.J. Summers stroked a pull-up jumper with 13 seconds remaining Saturday night to give the Pride a 69-68 victory over Park View. The win left Heritage and Potomac Falls tied for the AA Dulles District lead at 8-2 with four games for each team remaining.

“That was the shot heard ’round Loudoun,” said Heritage coach Mark Mallisham. “That is what high school basketball is all about. The fans were here tonight. It was a great environment. The Dulles District (race) is wide open.”

Park View, 9-3 in district, will now need some help if they are to win or force a tie for the district title and the Region II playoff berth that goes along with it.

For at least nine seconds Saturday it looked like Park View would escape with the win and maintain its district lead after Amechi Anyaugo went inside for a basket with 23 seconds left to tie the game at 67. Anyaugo was fouled on the play and he converted the free throw to give the Patriots the lead, 68-67.

It was a short-lived lead as Summers penetrated towards the middle and then pulled-up for the game-winning jumper.

“It wasn’t even a set play. Amechi overplayed me a little and I was able to hit the shot,” said Summers.

Ironically, Mallisham had been getting on Summers’ case in practice on Friday about his penchant for throwing up some wild shots in the lane instead of textbook form jumpers.

“He stopped on a dime in a crucial situation tonight,” said Mallisham.

Park View had a final chance to win the game. The Patriots had to call a timeout with 2.7 seconds left after a mad scramble for a loose ball on their end. With not a lot of time to work with and the ball out-of-bounds near midcourt, Park View guard Marcus Freeman got the ball and his twisting shot near the 3-point line almost went in at the buzzer.

“That ****** almost went in,” said Mallisham.

It was Freeman who hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds left that helped Park View cut into a 66-60 Heritage lead. Down by three, Kenny smith stole a long pass while the Patriots were applying a trapping fullcourt press, and he thre it up ahead to Anyaugo, who laid it in to make it 66-65 Heritage with 40 seconds to go.

Park View then put Bobby Edmonds on the foul line with 31 seconds left and the Pride senior made one of two for a 67-65 Pride lead. That set up the clutch antics of Anyaugo and then Summers.

The game was tight in the first quarter but the Patriots, playing without 6-foot-5 center James Nolen who is out for the season with a broken hand suffered against Freedom, went on a 6-0 run to end the first quarter to take a 22-16 lead.

For most of the first half, Park View center Thomas Mulabah had his way as he scored  12 of his 14 points. Freeman finished with a team-high 15 and Anyaugo had 14 for Park View.

The Patriots stretched the lead to 32-20 before Heritage mounted a comeback.

“People get up on us but we don’t hit the panic button,” said Mallisham.

The Pride turned up the defensive pressure, moving from a zone to more man coverage and Park View started making some turnovers. While Park View had only made two turnovers in the game to that point, the Patriots made six turnovers in the final four minutes of the second quarter.

“Our goal was not to let Amechi touch the basketball,” said Mallisham about his team’s plans to limit the Patriot sparkplug.

Heritage started finding the range from the 3-point arc with Myron McGowan hitting two treys and Summers knocking down a 3-pointer as Heritage fought back to tie the game at 38 at the half. In all the Pride had five players combine for 10 3-pointers.

“For us the 3-ball is a lay-up,” said Mallisham.

Pride point guard Chris Broderick led Heritage in scoring with 15 and Preston Findley added 14. Edmonds scored 13 and McGowan had 10 for Heritage.

Neither team could claim the game in the third quarter and Heritage led 53-50 going into the final quarter.

Free throws played a key role in the contest as Park View was just 7 of 16 from the line, while Heritage was 9 of 14.

With Park View back ahead 60-59 with 4:12 left, Findley knocked down a 3-pointer to give Heritage the 62-60 lead. And that is where the score would stay until 1:08 left.

As the Pride had slowed down the pace and didn’t show any desire to attack the basket, the Patriots were forced to foul. And foul they did as Broderick and Edmonds combined to shoot six throws in an 11-second span. Broderick was 3 of 4 total and Edmonds was 1 of 2 to give the Pride  a 66-60 lead with 57 seconds left.

Stunner in South Riding!

By: Dan Sousa

South Riding (Jan. 19, 2007) – The Freedom High School boys basketball team pulled off its biggest win in the school’s two-year history with a stunning 67-50 victory over AA Dulles District leader Heritage.

It was the Pride’s first loss since Dec. 19, ending an eight-game winning streak and it leaves the district race up in the air with three teams — Heritage, Park View and Potomac Falls — all with two losses.

Freedom Eagles trailed only one time during the entire game and that was the first shot of the game when Heritage’s D.J. Summers nailed a 3-pointer.  The following possesion Troy Dockett nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game and a steal and layin by Richie Smith put the Eagles up 5 – 3. Freedom (3-7, 6-11) never trailed the remainder of the game. Heritage (7-2, 11-5) had a cold hand from the 3-point arc on the evening making only three treys.

Overall the Eagles played very well with Ron Hill finishing with nine assists , nine points and eight rebounds and Henry Brisbe adding 16 points and 8 rebounds. Troy Dockett lead all scorers with 20 points and Chris Coleman came up big off of the Eagles bench with 11 points and five rebounds.

Fear the Chameleon!

By: Dan Sousa

Leesburg (Jan. 17, 2007) – Fear the chameleon! That is the message that the Heritage High School boys basketball team is sending these days.

Granted, “fear the chameleon”, doesn’t exactly invoke terror into the hearts of opponents, but it is certainly as scary as “fear the turtle” and you can’t argue with the Pride’s success since they changed offensive strategy – or changed colors as Heritage coach Mark Mallisham puts it — and went on an 8-game winning streak to take control of the AA Dulles District race.

“If we are going to lose, let’s lose our way,” is how Mallisham describes the coaching staff’s feelings after the team lost at Park View in December and dropped to 3-5 overall. “We change our colors like a chameleon. We don’t care who you are. We are going to get out after you.”

The latest victim to fall to the charm of the chameleon was preseason favorite Broad Run, which fell 62-48 Tuesday night. The Pride (7-1 in district, 11-5 overall) have now swept the season series against the Spartans (6-4, 11-6).

Evidence of the Heritage’s ever-changing game is the fact that D.J. Summers, who dropped 29 on Broad Run in the Pride’s 72-62 win on Dec. 12, was held to just three on Tuesday. Doing the damage for Heritage was junior Preston Findley, who has worked his way into the starting line-up since the season began, and he scored a career-high 18 including four 3-pointers.

“We have a lot of people that can shoot the basketball,” said Mallisham. “We have more weapons than we ever had.”

Case in point, despite Findley’s fine night and the usual steady-hand-on-the-till play of point guard Chris Broderick, the Pride didn’t get much from them in the final quarter as Broderick fouled out with 4:04 still remaining and Findley, on the bench with his fourth foul picked up 24 seconds into the quarter, didn’t score in the fourth.

That didn’t matter as the Pride still had the play of Summers who opened the fourth with a three-pointer to give Heritage a 36-30 lead and McGowan, who scored half of his 14 in the final quarter. Heritage also had the versatile Bobby Edmonds who calmly made all eight of his free throw attempts in the final quarter and hit a 3-pointer.

Broad Run got 16 points from Mark McGlone and 12 from Adrian Mines but Heritage kept Travis Clarke from  hitting any 3-pointers until the final quarter and he finished with nine.

“We knew the importance of this game,” said Broad Run coach Larry Boomer who saw his team let a lead slip away Saturday at Potomac Falls. “Our defense has been good enough this season to hold the fort while we have spun the wheels offensively.”

The game, with a surprisingly small attendance, started sluggishly – during one stretch neither team gained a point for more than three minutes. Findley’s 3-pointer with two seconds left in the first quarter made it 14-8 Heritage.

The second looked much like the first with neither team scoring for the first two minutes. A Findley 3-pointer followed by Curtis Rustin’s basket and then Edmonds layin gave Heritage a 21-10 advantage with 3:45 to go until the half.

McGlone drove to the basket to stop the run and then hit a trey to give the Spartans life. His baseline move in the final minute of the first half cut the Pride’s lead to 23-19.

Broad Run was able to tie the game in the third but the Spartans could never take the lead. With it tied at 25, McGowan made two free throws and Findley hit a 3-pointer. Broad Run came right back with Robbie Snow scoring in the transition and then making a put-back to cut the heritage lead to 30-29. Broad Run would not get any closer.

Findley was again the man, calmly stroking another 3-pointer and Potomac Falls led 33-30 after a McGlone free throw.

After Summers’ trey to open the fourth, Rustin made one of two free throw attempts and McGowan hit a 3-pointer for a 40-31 advantage with 6:38 to go. While the Spartans went five minutes in the fourth against Potomac Falls without a field goal, they went over three minutes Tuesday against Heritage and the cold spell cost them a chance to get back into the contest.

By the time Edmonds hit a 3-pointer to make it 45-34, the Spartans starting fouling and the Pride, led by Edmonds, were all but perfect – making 14 of 16 attempts including 12 of 14 in the fourth – to keep in the lead.

“Obviously our focus is now trying to play at home in the first round of the playoffs,” said Boomer.

Heritage Boys and Broad Run Girls Make the Turn in First Place

By: Dan Sousa

(Jan. 9, 2007) – The Broad Run girls are the only remaining AA Dulles District boys or girls basketball team undefeated in league play after a convincing 58-45 victory over Park View Monday night in a first-place showdown in Ashburn. The Spartans will make the turn towards the second half of district play in first along with the Heritage boys, an 80-73 winner over Loudoun County Monday. A week ago the Pride were in danger of falling two full games behind then district undefeated Park View but the Patriots loss at Potomac Falls Friday and Monday’s overtime loss to Broad Run leaves Heritage along in first. Potomac Falls, Broad Run and Park View are all one game behind the Pride in what promises to be an eventful scramble towards the regular-season finish line and the post-season tournament.
