Leesburg (Jan. 30, 2009) – Loudoun area basketball players officially had back-to-back days off this week with the snow and ice but that didn’t stop the Park View High School boys team from getting together on their own to keep their skills sharp and it paid off Thursday as the Patriots never trailed after the opening quarter and rolled to a 70-58 AA Dulles District victory over host Heritage.
The boys win made it a sweep for Park View as the girls opened the night, behind Rachael Miller’s four 3-pointers and 23 points, with a 55-44 win over the Pride. Karita powered inside for 16 in the win and Megan Barnes added nine for Park View. Necole Sterling led Heritage with 18.
In the boys game, Park View had four players finish in double figures with Donnie Royer hitting for a career-best 16 points. Royer, who was relentless inside, especially on second chances, was supported by Marcus Freeman (14), Josh Jones (12) and Kenny Smith (12).
Heritage had nine players who scored in the contest but seemed a bit flat on the offensive end. Leading 17-14 heading into the second quarter, Heritage went cold from the field and Park View 9-0 to take a lead they would not give up.
Several times Heritage fought back to get close, within two towards the end of the second quarter, within three midway through the third, and within three with five minutes to go in the game, but each time, Park View had the answer with a series of quick baskets to put the lead back out of reach.
Smith made a nice move inside followed by a Jordan Owens jumper and then a Freeman drive that resulted in a three-point play to turn the 55-52 game into a 62-52 Park View lead with three minutes remaining.
Freshman guard Mo Berchie led the Pride with 13 points, six of which came in the closing moments. Stephen Shockley, fighting foul trouble early, didn’t score in the first half but hit two treys in the third quarter and finished with 10 points for Heritage.

Breaking News: Williams Named New Heritage Football Coach

By Dan Sousa
LoudounPrepSports.com Senior Content Editor
Leesburg (Feb. 11, 2009) – Heritage High School Athletic Director Ron Petrella confirmed Wednesday that the Pride has hired offensive coordinator Steve Williams as the new varsity football coach.
Williams takes over for Wes Driskill who stepped down at end of the fall season after leading the Pride since the school opened in 2002. Williams, with Heritage since it opened, started out as a JV football coach for two seasons before moving to the varsity staff under Driskill.
“We are very excited,” said Petrella. “Not only is he an excellent teacher in the building but he has great rapport with the players. When we beat Park View for the first time ever, both (Williams) and Wes were doused with Gatorade.”
Williams previously was the varsity wrestling coach at Heritage for three seasons and coached the boys soccer team for four seasons, stepping down after the 2007 season.
According to the football schedule that Petrella released, Williams will have his work cut out for him as the Pride are moving up to AAA classification next season from AA and will have an incredibly tough schedule that features area power Stone Bridge, defending AA Division 4 champion Broad Run, Prince William powers Hylton, Battlefield and Stonewall Jackson and a quality program from the Fredericksburg area, Colonial Forge. And if that wasn’t enough, the Pride will play AAA Division 6 runner-up Osbourn not once, but twice, and face Loudoun’s largest school, Loudoun Valley, also twice.

Sterling (Jan. 23, 2009) – The Potomac Falls High School Girls Swim team and the Broad Run Boys team earned Dulles District Titles on Friday at the Dulles District Championship meet at Claude Moore Recreational Center.  The Panthers have now won four consecutive District Titles, while the Spartan boys are on a two-year winning streak.  Both teams went undefeated in the regular season.

The Briar Woods girls team came in second place Friday and was leading Potomac Falls by as much as 18 points during the meet, but the Panthers were able to win a few key races and the final race to put them ahead by 3 points for the win.  “It was exciting to have such great competition this year,” said Potomac Falls Coach Flowers. “Winning this year means more than it ever has.”

The Potomac Falls girls won the 200 Yard Medley Relay, a race they have won every year since 2006.  Seniors Kirby Shook has been on that winning team all four years.  Joining  Shook on that winning relay team were Carla Harvey and Bridget Werner and Taylor Ayers.  Harvey, Shook and Warner then teamed this Caylyn Tate to win the 200 Freestyle relay.  “I’ve grown alot with all these people, they’re not only my teammates and classmates, but they’ve grown to be my really good friends and as cheesy as it sounds, my family, and I’m going to miss them alot next year,” said Caylyn Tate.  Tate also won the 500 Freestyle race with a time of 5:09:73.  Werner also won the 100 Yard Backstroke with a time 1:00.21.  Kirby Shook said, “to see everyone come together, especially in the last moments like that, and pull it together for the team is so exciting.” Shook also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 25:40.

Elise Guessford of Briar Woods led her team with a win in the Girls 100 Yard Free and Girls 200 Yard Free.

The Broad Run boys, in a show of Depth won all 3 relay events. The Spartans won the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:43:12, which broke the District record of 1:45:21 set by their team last year. Broad run has now won this event for the fourth consecutive year. Mark Sarman, Andrew Tram and Mike Poltash were this years team.  Junior Cameron Lucas, who has been on that team for the past 3 years said, “We have great depth, it’s not whose first, it’s not whose second, it’s whose third, fourth and fifth. We just have a great team.” Mark Sarman, Andrew Tram and Mike Poltash were the others on this years 200 Medley Relay team.  Mike Poltash also teamed with Brendan LewisAlan Horback and Jacob Leidy to win the 200 Freestyle Relay.  To finish off the night Lucas, Sarman, Leidy and Lewis set a distict record with a time of 3:25:93…just nipping the PF boys record from 2006 by 1/100 of a second.  Lucas also took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00:55 finishing almost 8 seconds ahead of second place and he won the 500 Freestyle race with a time of 5:03:28.   Sarman broke the 100 Fly record with a time of 52.09 (previously set in 2006 by Bryan Durazo -52.35). He also won the 100 Breaststroke event with a time of 1:00.88.

DigitalSports.com Loudoun Wrestling Rankings

LPS Rankings 4.0: Rankings thru Jan. 22

Background: Welcome to our first ever prep wrestling rankings for Loudoun County, which includes wrestlers for all 10 public high schools in the county, the eight AA Dulles District schools and the two AAA schools. These rankings are done by a local wrestling fan who we shall call …. “Half Nelson” (his brother “Full Nelson” is a pain in the neck …)!

“Half Nelson” will do his best to give you his opinion of which wrestlers are ranked 1-4 in each weight category. Since this is our first attempt at this and it is only the second week of the season, consider this a real work on progress that will improve each week, especially with your positive input. And also remember NO RANKINGS ARE PERFECT! Unless those rankings say that the LPS Monkey is cool … then, well, we would believe that is a perfect ranking … so … on with the Rankings!

DigitalSports.com Loudoun Wrestling Rankings

About the rankings: These rankings are accoring to results that have been sent into LoudounPrepSports.com. Some teams may not be represented, especially if they don’t send in their records to us. If you have any records of individuals that are not ranked and want us to consider them for the rankings, please send them to lpsrankings@hotmail.com. You can also forward corrections of ranked wrestler records.

Feedback: Want to have your feedback for these rankings printed on this page? Email LPS Editor Dan Sousa at dsousa@digitalsports.com. Rule #1 is “Don’t talk about Fight Club …” no, that isn’t it. Rule #1 is keep it civil or we won’t print the comments. Please don’t tell us why a wrestling “shouldn’t be ranked”, simply tell us why your favorite wrestler should be ranked.

DigitalSports.com Wrestling Rankings (thru. Jan. 22)

A lot of movement in the rankings as Dulles District wrestlers went head-to-head on Friday in the Super Quads. Nick Rea (PF) at 103, Chuong Le (Free) at 119, Thomas Hulcher (BW) at 130, Charlie Haislip (PF) at 140 and Alex O’Connor (LV) at 215 all break into the No. 1 spots in their weight classes.
